Adult students benefit from Penn State scholarships just for them

Two-thirds of all college students receive some type of financial aid, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), but most aid is focused on full-time traditional-age students. Adult students — a population NCES expects will grow 20 percent by 2020 — have fewer financial aid options, because often they are enrolled part time. To help adult students achieve their education goal, Penn State is creating scholarships and other financial aid options for these students.

Hazleton financial aid workshop rescheduled to Feb. 4

The financial aid workshop by Penn State Hazleton's Office of Student Aid scheduled for Monday, Jan. 28, has been postponed due to inclement weather. The workshop will now be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in Room 115 of the Evelyn Graham Academic Building on the campus. This free session is open to parents and students planning to attend any college or university.

Admissions Office will host series of free programs in February

The Penn State Beaver Admissions Office will host a variety of free programs in February for prospective students of all ages and their families.

-- An Application Workshop will be held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 2. and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 18 in the Admissions Office, Student Union Building. Participants can complete an application and those applying to Beaver campus may receive an immediate decision. The $50 application fee will be waived, and all are asked to bring official transcripts. Campus tours will also be available.

Nearly one-third of Penn State's undergraduate students are first-generation college students, and almost four-fifths receive some form of financial aid, including 4,483 students who received Trustee Scholarships, presenters told Penn State's Board of Trustees today (Nov. 16).

Penn State York is offering an Application Completion Night from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, in Room 103 (lower level) of the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center) on campus. Admissions counselors will walk participants through the process, answer questions and offer help in completing the application in time for fall semester admission to Penn State. This event is open to high school seniors.

The free webinars are for current Penn State York students and college-bound high school students and their parents.

As a public service for families of any college-bound student, Penn State Behrend is offering six online and two on-campus information sessions that walk participants through the financial aid search and application process. Included in the sessions will be an overview of the many sources of aid available; a review of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); and an explanation of the importance of meeting application deadlines.

Students and their parents may attend a workshop from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 17 or Jan. 19, at the campus in Center Valley. The snow date is 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 2. Seating is limited. Reserve a space by Jan. 13, 2012, by calling 610-285-5000.

Applications, deadlines, types of financial aid and more will be discussed during financial aid nights, to take place area high schools and offered by Penn State York. The first financial aid night is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, at Northeastern High school, 300 High Street, Manchester, Pa. The program is free and open to the public. The program is designed both for students about to graduate from high school and adults who are preparing for a return to the classroom.

Open House for prospective students announced

Prospective students and their families are invited to attend an Open House beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Penn State Lehigh Valley campus in Center Valley, Pa. The program offers information to local high school juniors and seniors considering admission to Penn State, and students who have already been offered admission to the University. Prospective students can learn about the options and opportunities at Penn State, speak with faculty, and interact with students, staff and alumni. A financial aid Q&A session also will be part of the program.
