Catholic Newman Club raises $496 for those in need

In December, students in the Penn State Beaver Catholic Newman Club raised $496.27 to benefit Catholic Relief Services (CRS) through the Work of Human Hands sale. Sales were conducted in the Brodhead Bistro for a week prior to the holidays.

The Work of Human Hands program allows hosts to sell high quality, fairly traded handcrafts and gourmet food items from disadvantaged producers across the globe. The CRS Fair Trade network guarantees fair wages to disadvantaged artisans, farmers and workers. It also provides the technical and financial assistance that many people desperately need but rarely get in a conventional trading system.

Brandywine professor, University Park students promote fair trade

Penn State Brandywine Associate Professor of Earth Science Laura Guertin has proved to be a great inspiration to students at the campus, at University Park and throughout the region when it comes to the fair trade movement.

Guertin, whose students' months-long effort earned the Brandywine campus a fair trade designation last summer, reflected on the experience in October as a presenter at the Fair Trade Campaigns Conference in Chicago.

Junior Sarah DeMartino, who led the fair trade movement at the campus before transferring to University Park this fall to complete a degree in international relations, is a National Steering Committee Member of Fair Trade Universities and led two workshops on "Working with your Administration" and "Effective Social Networking."

Six students from Fair Trade Penn State attended the Fair Trade Campaigns Conference from Oct. 26 to 28 in Chicago. Fair Trade Penn State aims to "empower producer communities, activists and consumers, and radically redefine power structures through people-centered, democratic trading alternatives."

S'mores for everyone to raise awareness about fair trade chocolate

To raise awareness about fair trade issues and child labor used in some cocoa fields, Penn State Brandywine students (the Fair Trade "TrailBlazers" as they are known) will host a fair trade s'mores event on campus Thursday, Aug. 16 in the John D. Vairo Library courtyard at 12:30 p.m.

Town of Media honors Brandywine with fair trade award

Just two months after Penn State Brandywine was declared a Fair Trade University, thanks to a student-led campaign, the campus was honored with the Regional Fair Trade Award by the Media Fair Trade Town Committee. Media, where the campus is located, was the first Fair Trade Town in America.

To honor and recognize the significant contributions David '74 H&HD and Marjorie Rosenberg have made to expand civic engagement efforts at Penn State Brandywine, the campus will designate one course each semester (fall and spring) as the Rosenberg Civic Engagement Course.

International experience inspires Fair Trade event

In March 2011, students from two classes were offered an alternative spring break experience in Costa Rica. A reflective research project following their experience abroad also was required to complete the class. Three of the students who took part were inspired by what they learned about fair trade practices in Costa Rica and have organized a Fair Trade Awareness event from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on April 18, in room 135 at the campus in Center Valley.

Pennsylvania College of Technology students enrolled in the applied human services major held a Ten Thousand Villages sale of fair-trade crafted items recently, raising $3,000 for the world's working poor. Ten Thousand Villages works with more than 100 artisan groups in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, enabling artisans to earn a fair wage.
