Dependent verifications end soon, two-thirds of faculty and staff have completed

Penn State employees who have not yet submitted the required documents for the Dependent Verification Program must do so by March 30 in order to continue medical, dental and vision plans beyond March 31. Non-verified dependents will be removed from coverage plans April 1. Additionally, those receiving tuition discounts that are not verified will lose this benefit by the start of the summer 2013 semester.

Mastrian receives Novosel award for distinguished nursing alumni

Kathleen Mastrian, associate professor of nursing and coordinator of the Nursing program at Penn State Shenango, received the 2012 Shirley Novosel Distinguished Nursing Alumni Award, presented by the Penn State Nursing Alumni Society, at the School of Nursing's second annual Homecoming brunch on Oct. 7. Mastrian is a leader and expert in nursing informatics, a discipline on the cutting edge of nursing science. The second edition of her book "Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge" was published this year by Jones and Bartlett and is used in more than 150 nursing schools and 350 nursing courses worldwide. She is also senior managing editor of the Online Journal of Nursing Informatics.

Breastfeeding support program has Penn State ahead of the game

On Jan. 20, U.S. Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin released the "Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding". The goal of the report is call on health care providers, employers, insurers, policymakers, researchers and the community at large to take concrete action steps to support mothers in reaching their personal breastfeeding goals. Penn State has taken steps to support faculty, staff and students who want to continue to provide breastmilk to their children even after returning to work or school at Penn State. Penn State's Breastfeeding Support Program provides a range of support services at Penn State's University Park and Abington campuses, with plans to expand to additional campuses in the coming year.
