Call for proposals issued for Diverse Literacies Conference

Penn State Lehigh Valley, in conjunction with the Lehigh Valley Writing Project, is pleased to announce a call for proposals for the sixth annual Diverse Literacies Conference, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Bear Creek Resort in Macungie, Pa.

Information sessions set for graduate programs at Penn State York

Teachers and others in the education field can learn more about the master of education in teaching and curriculum degree, and a number of graduate certificates offered at Penn State York during two information sessions at the campus: from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 30 and Nov. 1, in the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center. The sessions are free and open to the public.
The 30-credit master of education degree in teaching and curriculum is designed to enhance the skills of teachers for public and private schools. The program focuses on three essential components -- curriculum, instruction and assessment -- that contribute to the organization's philosophy of learning, nurturance and scholarship. Courses are designed to reflect the standards of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

Professor helps international students sharpen their English skills

This past summer, approximately 20 international graduate students traveled from their homelands to the Philadelphia region over many hours and through multiple time zones. With intentions to begin a one-year master's degree program in finance at Penn State Great Valley, the students soon found out that getting to their U.S. destination was the easy part. For first-time visitors, even having studied the English language for many years in school, it would take a while to grasp the quirks and nuances of American language and culture.

Online program offers certificate in teaching English abroad

Penn State Lehigh Valley's Office of Continuing Education is currently accepting enrollments for a new program in Teaching English as a Second Language Abroad (TESLA). This three-week online program provides a basic introduction to teaching English language learners (ELL) in foreign contexts. The program runs May 22-28, May 29-June 4 and June 5-11.

Intensive English communication program receives accreditation

An intensive English program at Penn State that helps international students acquire the language necessary for higher education success was recently accredited by The Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA), a specialized agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Program trains speech-language teachers to aid immigrant children

Identifying and treating communication disorders in immigrant children is the focus of MOSAIC (Multiplying Opportunities for Services and Access for Immigrant Children), which will train future speech-language pathologists and other professionals to work with immigrant children who are learning to speak English as a second language (ESL). The program, funded by a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education, will provide specialized training to 22 graduate students in Penn State's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders over the next four years.

Professor receives grant to study bilingual school readiness program

Carol Scheffner Hammer, associate professor of communication sciences and disorders in Penn State's College of Health and Human Development, was recently awarded a $500,000 Head Start-University Partnership Grant that studies the efficacy of a bilingual school-readiness program called Madres educando a sus ninos/Mothers Educating Their Children, a book-reading program that engages mothers through the Hispanic culture.
