Logan named deputy editor of new environmental journal

Bruce Logan, Evan Pugh Professor and the Stan and Flora Kappe Professor of Environmental Engineering, has been named the inaugural deputy editor of the newly launched Environmental Science and Technology (ES&T) Letters journal.

Environmental engineer Bruce Logan elected to national academy

Penn State environmental engineer Bruce Logan has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the organization announced today (Feb. 7).

Logan is one of 69 new members and 11 foreign associates elected for 2013, bringing the total membership to 2,250 and foreign associates to 211.

Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice or education as well as pioneering new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.

Bruce Logan, Kappe, professor of environmental engineering, was one of three Penn State faculty recently named an Evan Pugh Professor, joining a list of only 62 recognized since the title's inception in 1960. Evan Pugh Professorships are the highest honor the University bestows on its faculty.

The College of Engineering has won two 2011 CUPPIE Awards from CUPRAP, the Association of Communicators in Education. The college won a bronze award in the feature story category for the article "'Miracle Tree' May Provide Clean Water to Developing Countries." The college also won a bronze award in the print publications/cover category for the fall Engineering Penn State alumni magazine.

In his policy speech today (Feb. 3) at Penn State, President Barack Obama advocated alternate energy research and increased energy efficiency. Often called the "miracle tree" for its potential to provide food, fuel and water in harsh environments, the moringa oleifera tree is at the center of a new effort by three Penn State engineers to provide clean drinking water to the developing world. The work -- funded by a year-long, $10,000 Environmental Protection Agency P3 grant -- seeks to optimize a water treatment process involving the moringa seed.

Bruce Logan, the Kappe Professor of environmental engineering at Penn State, has won a 2009 best paper award from the American Chemical Society's Environmental Science & Technology (ES&T) magazine. The paper, co-authored with colleagues at China's Tsing-hua University, won ES&T's top technology paper award. Ten papers were selected out of 1,400 peer-reviewed articles published by ES&T.
