Waynick Lecture to focus on 'Space Katrina'

Student's startup company wins international award

Advait Kumar, a third-year electrical engineering student, recently received an international award through his startup company, Swajal. The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) awarded Kumar funding for his project that focuses on a cheap, clean drinking water supply for villages in the industrial belts in India.

Students hope to create more reliable emergency communications network

A collaboration between Penn State engineers and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Lincoln Laboratory, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology (DHS S&T) Directorate, is working to give emergency personnel unhindered communications when responding to an incident or disaster.

Over the past few months, undergraduate engineering students have been testing an ultra-high frequency (UHF) system on Penn State's University Park campus and other locations. The work, still in its initial phases, includes a radio designed, built and tested entirely by undergraduates, which formed the heart of the system tested this last summer and fall. A mobile repeater with a drone or other aircraft acting as the UHF signal relay also was the focus of an award-winning senior engineering capstone design project last spring.

Electrical engineering's Datta named IEEE fellow

Suman Datta, professor of electrical engineering, has been named a fellow by the Institute of Industrial and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

IEEE cited Datta's contributions to high-performance advanced silicon and compound semiconductor transistor technologies. According to the group, Datta's contributions in advanced silicon CMOS and compound semiconductor transistors have made a strong impact to the semiconductor industry and academic research, and have directly contributed to the advancement of high performance logic transistor technology over the last decade.

Penn State establishes relationship with Chinese university

The College of Engineering has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with China's Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST).

The MOU establishes a relationship between the education and teaching programs at Penn State and HUST's College of Optics and Electronic Information. The five-year agreement paves the way for joint research centers; collaborative degree programs; student exchange programs; faculty exchanges; joint research projects and educational programs; and exchange of scientific materials, publications and information.
