Graduate student team wins $10,000 for sustainability research

A diverse team of judges has recognized an interdisciplinary team of graduate students as the grand prize winner of $10,000 in the Dow Sustainability Innovation Student Challenge Award (SISCA) at Penn State. Roland Cusick , ciivil and environmental engineering; Marta Hatzell, civil and environmental engineering; Michael Parks, sociology; and Emily Smith-Greenaway, sociology; developed a solution titled "Sustainable Improvement of Drinking-water and Sanitation in African Slums using Microbial Electrochemical Technologies and Attention to Self-efficacy within Local Communities." The faculty adviser for the team was Bruce Logan, Evan Pugh Chair of Environmental Engineering.
The second place team of Yuexiao Shen, chemical engineering; Patrick Saboe, chemical engineering; Bryan Ferlez, biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology; Mustafa Erbakan, bioengineering; and Manuel Escotet will be awarded $2,500 for their entry: "Solar Energy Based Biomimetic Water Desalination and Purification."

The program recognizes and rewards students and universities for innovation and research of sustainable solutions to the world's most pressing social, economic and environmental problems.

This summer, Penn State began a new partnership with the Dow Chemical Co. to improve laboratory safety at the University. A diverse team of faculty, safety officers and graduate students from the Departments of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering (MATSE), as well as the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Office, are working with Dow to develop best practices that can be instituted across all laboratory research departments at Penn State. The goal is to improve the University's safety culture

This year Penn State will be participating in the Dow Sustainability Innovation Challenge Award (SISCA). The competition recognizes graduate students and universities for innovations in the advancements of a more sustainable world. Winners will be selected and awarded for original and holistic thinking, excellence in research, potential to make significant improvements to society, and strong interdisciplinary work. The top team will win a monetary prize of $10,000 (a runner-up team will be awarded $2,500).

Penn State named The Dow Chemical Co. its "Corporate Partner of the Year" on Friday, Nov. 5, at the University's Board of Trustees meeting at the Nittany Lion Inn. Penn State President Graham Spanier presented the award to Dow in celebration of the company's longstanding philanthropic commitment to the University. "Dow Chemical's exemplary support of Penn State has touched an enormous variety of programs and initiatives at the University and I look forward to growing this mutually beneficial relationship," said Spanier.
