Fundraiser to benefit the American Red Cross, victims of Sandy

The Penn State Alumni Association-York County Chapter is joining forces with the Penn State York Alumni Society and Buffalo Wild Wings to raise money for the American Red Cross relief efforts for those impacted by Superstorm Sandy. From 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Dec. 12, Buffalo Wild Wings will donate 10 percent of all pre-taxed food sales at its 89 Wilson Avenue, Hanover, and 105 Northern Way, York, locations to the American Red Cross for relief efforts.

Video: Mock bus crash helps educate students, first responders

Students enrolled in a Penn State Continuing Education class, along with emergency responders from the State College area, participated recently in a mock bus crash. Students had the opportunity to benefit from a hands-on learning experience while local emergency responders had a chance to practice for a disaster scenario.

An interdisciplinary discussion of the disasters in Japan

Five University and community organizations are joining together to sponsor a presentation that will focus on the problems and impacts of the recent events in Japan. "Disasters in Japan: A Community Discussion" will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 11 at Greg Sutliff Auditorium in the Lewis Katz Building on Penn State's University Park campus. A reception with refreshments and the opportunity to make donations to relief efforts in Japan opens the event at 6:30 p.m. Donations will be sent to the American Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief Fund.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has designated September as National Preparedness Month, and an emergency-response expert in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences says Pennsylvania residents should join the country in planning for disasters.
