Laid-off workers enroll in Penn State World Campus for new careers

It might seem like Michael Braddock, 52, of Monaca, Pa., and Jeffrey Frye, 34, of East Palestine, Ohio, wouldn't have much in common, but both worked at the Beaver Falls plant of Armstrong World Industries, a ceiling tiles manufacturer, which closed in 2011. Now both are enrolled in Penn State's World Campus to prepare for new careers with help from U.S. Department of Labor programs for workers whose jobs have been impacted by foreign trade.

James Ruiz earns national mentoring award

For more than a decade, Penn State Harrisburg Associate Professor of Criminal Justice James Ruiz has gained a stellar reputation for his commitment to mentor students during their time at the campus and following graduation. The Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences formally recognized that dedication when it recently presented Ruiz with its 2010 Outstanding Mentor Award during the annual conference in San Diego, Calif.

Sept. 29 presentation in Harrisburg to focus on human trafficking

Even the midstate is not immune to the fastest-growing criminal activity in the world - human trafficking. Penn State Harrisburg professor Barbara Sims, chair of the college's undergraduate and graduate Criminal Justice programs, will profile her research into human trafficking in the U.S., the midstate, and throughout the world, during a 12:30 p.m. presentation Tuesday, Sept. 29 in the Gallery Lounge on the Penn State Harrisburg campus. English-speaking countries throughout the world are struggling with issues involving race and crime which mirror America's, a Penn State Harrisburg researcher has found. In his most recent book, Penn State Harrisburg faculty member Shaun Gabbidon has expanded his pioneering research in the field with a look at four other nations and finds their issues quite similar to those in America. And they all have their roots in Colonialism.

Online criminal justice program receives pioneering certification

The Penn State World Campus online criminal justice program, with its academic home in the Criminal Justice Program at Penn State Harrisburg, became the first online program in the country to be awarded certification through the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS). Barbara Sims, professor of criminal justice and criminal justice chair at Penn State Harrisburg, said the certification reinforces the reputation that the online program is earning for quality criminal justice instruction.

Lawrence Driscoll, new Fayette professor researching Criminal Justice

Lawrence N. Driscoll has joined the Administration of Justice faculty at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus. Driscoll is teaching "Introduction to Criminal Justice," "Criminal Justice" and "American Policing." His current Criminal Justice research is examining issues related to false reports and lie detection.

Faculty member earns national accolade

Penn State Harrisburg faculty member Shaun Gabbidon's pioneering research and scholarship in the field of criminal justice has earned him another national accolade. For his "outstanding work in the field of racial and ethnic issues in criminology," the professor of criminal justice has been named the winner of the William Edward Burghardt (W.E.B.) Du Bois Award presented annually by the Western Society of Criminology.

Career in criminal justice far from Korean student's economics degree

When Joongyeup Lee earned a bachelor's degree in economics in his native South Korea, he had no inkling that a career in criminal justice was in his future. But two years in the South Korean Army and master's degree study at Penn State Harrisburg have put him on a new path that has already resulted in academic honors and a full scholarship.
