President's Equity Commissions seek applications for membership

The Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equity (CLGBTE), the Commission on Racial/Ethnic Diversity (CORED) and the Commission for Women (CFW) are now accepting applications for both appointed and affiliate membership. Appointed members serve three- to four-year terms (depending on the commission) and have voting privileges. Affiliate members serve one-year, renewable terms and do not have voting privileges. Appointed and affiliate terms begin July 1.

CORED to host workshop on diversity in the classroom

Religious diversity in a contemporary global context is potentially one of the most galvanizing topics in any curriculum. Consequently, instructors often try to avoid it, but at what cost to students? The Penn State Commission on Racial/Ethnic Diversity (CORED) will hold a workshop on dealing with diversity in the classroom titled "Dealing with Controversy in the Classroom: Take Religion," from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 16 in Room 129 Waring Hall on the University Park campus. Registration is open to the Penn State community. A catered lunch will be provided. To attend, RSVP to Pauline McCarl at pqh101@psu.edu by Feb. 10.

CORED to hold Promotion and Tenure Symposium on Oct. 24

The Commission on Racial/Ethnic Diversity (CORED) will hold its seventh annual Promotion and Tenure Symposium titled, "What's Diversity Got to do With It?" from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, in the Hintz Family Alumni Center on the University Park campus. The symposium will include plenary and breakout sessions, as well as a panel discussion. Information about speakers and registration will be announced at a later date. Registration is open to the Penn State community. Pretenured faculty, persons serving on promotion and tenure committees, and administrators involved in the promotion and tenure process are especially encouraged to attend.

CORED to hold instructional development workshop on Sept. 22

The Commission on Racial/Ethnic Diversity (CORED) will hold its first instructional development workshop, titled "Diversifying Undergraduate Instruction: Exploring New Curricular Models for Global Engagement," from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, in Room 129 Waring Hall on the University Park campus. The workshop will feature a presentation by Khanjan Mehta, director of the Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship (HESE) program, who will talk about his work with students from various Penn State colleges who are engaged in engineering service projects in different countries.

Mentors and proteges sought for Intercultural Staff Mentoring Program

The Commission on Racial/Ethnic Diversity (CORED), in conjunction with Penn State's Office of Human Resources, is seeking participants for its University-wide mentoring program. The Intercultural Staff Mentoring Program is designed to enhance the professional and personal development of racial and ethnically underrepresented staff (exempt and nonexempt) and technical-service employees by formally connecting them with mentors who can provide advice and support on a variety of work-related issues including career planning, job skill enhancement, University involvement and community resources.
