Chapin receives Congressional Citation

John Chapin, professor of communications at Penn State Beaver, is the recipient of the 2012 United States House of Representatives Congressional Victims' Rights Caucus Certificate awarded by Congressman Jim Costa and Congressman Ted Poe, co-chairs of the Congressional Victims' Rights Caucus for work on behalf of victims of crime. In the past, Chapin has received citations from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and the U.S. House of Representatives for his research and volunteer work on behalf of domestic violence victims through providing domestic violence prevention and awareness programs. THON raises record $7.8 million for Four Diamonds Fund

THON 2010 overall chair Caitlin Zankowski screamed and jumped around the stage as the overall committee revealed the total raised in this year's 46-hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping event. In spite of the continuing weak economy, this year's total reached a new record high of more than $7.8 million, surpassing last year's total by more than $347,000. Penn State Board plans to lower tuition increase

Penn State's Board of Trustees discussed plans Friday (March 20) to moderate projected tuition increases next year. John P. Surma, chair of the Board's Subcommittee on Finance, reported an effort will be made to moderate earlier projected 2009-10 tuition increases. The discussion comes in response to concerns about how the current economic situation has affected students and their families.

Plants, genetically modified to ease the breaking down of their woody material, could be the key to a cheaper and greener way of making ethanol, according to Penn State researchers who add that the approach also could help turn agricultural waste into food for livestock.

The work of several Penn State researchers -- political scientists Eric Plutzer and Michael Berkman and graduate student Julianna Pacheco; Dennis vanEngelsdorp, acting state apiarist for Pennsylvania and senior extension associate at Penn State; and Robert Eckhardt, professor of developmental genetics and evolutionary morphology -- is highlighted in three stories that are part of Discover Magazine's "Top 100 Stories of 2008" in the current January 2009 issue.

World Campus named to list of top military friendly universities

Military Advanced Education, an authority on education for military personnel, announced recently that the Penn State World Campus was selected as one of the publication's 2008 Top Military Friendly Colleges and Universities honorees. The designation appears in the December 2008 issue. Penn State Outreach Vice President Craig Weidemann said that the recognition reveals the level of commitment that the World Campus has for military students whether they are active duty, National Guard, Reserve or veterans.

Penn State offers Web series on gas exploration issues

To address the opportunities and challenges of exploring for natural gas in the Marcellus shale in much of Pennsylvania, Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences and Penn State Cooperative Extension will offer a six-part series of online seminars starting this month and running through May 2009. The "webinars" will cover a variety of topics ranging from the local government's role in gas exploration to the effects of deep-well drilling methods on water supplies.

Professor Victor Romero writes 'Everyday Law for Immigrants'

Renowned legal scholar and law professor Victor C. Romero has authored a new guide on the U.S. immigration system for readers who are not lawyers. "Everyday Law for Immigrants," part of the Everyday Law Series by Paradigm Publishers, will hit store shelves on December 30.

"My modest hope is that the book will provide a clear and concise overview of the laws that most affect noncitizens living in the United States, from formal immigration rules that govern when noncitizens may enter and must leave the country, to other laws that affect immigrants' daily existence, from education to employment, for instance," said Romero.

Medical Center earns Department of Health and Human Services honor

At the fourth National Learning Congress on Donation and Transplantation recently held in Nashville, Tenn., Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center received the 2008 Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Medal of Honor for excellence in family care and for achieving an outstanding rate of organ donation Seventy-five percent of nonrecoverable patients donated organs in a 12-month period.

Morgan Family Foundation funds research in bio-energy

The Morgan Family Foundation, of Los Altos, Cal., has committed $270,000 over the next two years to fund research at the Biomass Energy Center in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. The Biomass Energy Center coordinates and facilitates bioenergy research and outreach across the University, building teams to address the complete value chain of biomass energy systems. Biomass energy or "bioenergy" refers to the use of organic materials to generate electricity, produce biofuel, or create products normally made through nonorganic methods. The foundation's gift supports a project that will partner Penn State with Dartmouth College, Iowa State University, and the environmental stewardship organization, Sustainable Conservation.
