Professor develops curricula to encourage family communication

Penn State Brandywine Assistant Professor of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) Marinda Kathryn Harrell-Levy, who is new to campus this semester, was invited by the Alabama Department of Public Health to present at a live satellite conference and webcast about healthy communication between parents and teens on Monday, Oct. 29. York faculty member wins communication research and scholarship award

Deborah Eicher-Catt, associate professor of communication arts and sciences at Penn State York, is the recipient of the Pennsylvania Communication Association (PCA) 2012 Donald H. Ecroyd Research and Scholarship Award. The award was presented on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the PCA 73th Annual Convention held at Ursinus College, in Collegeville, Pa.

The Donald H. Ecroyd Research and Scholarship Award honors a commitment to and a sustained record of research or publication in the field of communication.

Researcher offers brief essay on bilingualism's benefits to the brain

Judith Kroll, distinguished professor of psychology, linguistics and women's studies and director of Penn State's Center for Language Science (CLS), has published numerous articles on the cognitive processes that underlie language, communication and bilingualism. Today in a syndicated public radio series called "Academic Minute," she explains some highlights of CLS research on the mental exercise that bilingual speakers perform that benefits their brains -- and that can benefit new language learners as well.

"First do no harm" is an oath taken by all physicians, but despite this aspiration, the Institute of Medicine estimates that 44,000-98,000 patients die each year due to medical errors. Sixty percent are due to ineffective communication, and the lion's share of these miscommunications occurs at the time patients' care is transferred between providers. In response to these safety concerns, to foster inter-provider communication and a culture of interaction, the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goal 02.05.01 requires "Implementation of a standardized approach to 'handoff' communications, including an opportunity to ask and respond to questions."

Thoughtful words help fighting couples stay fit

Couples who bring thoughtful words to a fight release lower amounts of stress-related proteins, suggesting that rational communication between partners can ease the impact of marital conflict on the immune system. "Previous research has shown that couples who are hostile to each other show health impairments and are at greater risk of disease," said Jennifer Graham, Penn State assistant professor of biobehavioral health. "We wanted to know if couples who use thoughtfulness and reasoning in the midst of a fight incur potential health benefits."

Like most people, I think, I was influenced by a couple of professors I met while an undergraduate. I liked their classes and found what they did interesting, so I followed suit.

Taking The Scenic Route: The Internet and the Information Superhighway

The concept of a national information superhighway has been around for at least a decade, but with the installation of the Clinton administration the rhetoric on the subject seems to have exploded. Computer, telecommunications, and broadcast technologies are converging into a single integrated complex that will allow an individual to access anything from on-line databases to the latest movie from his or her couch. According to television ads by the phone companies and cable networks a brave new world of communications is dawning.

Outlook: Reporting on Global Warming

On the way to the airport, the taxi driver asked why I was going to D.C. "For a discussion meeting on global warming," I answered.

"Oh, that's never going to happen," he said. I told him I was an expert, but he had read enough. He quoted Reader's Digest to me. "We don't have to worry about global warming," he said. "You're wasting your time."
