Speaker to discuss building a local food system for York County

"Building a Local Food System for York County" is the topic when Rob Wood of Spoutwood Farms in Glen Rock, Pa., speaks at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, at Penn State York. The free program, sponsored by the Penn State York Agricultural Science Club, is in the Community Room of the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center and is open to the public. The Agricultural Science Club invites speakers to the campus to talk about topics related to animals and farming.

Wood will discuss the differences between locally grown organic crops and those that are imported to the supermarket. Most of our food usually comes from California or Florida, but increasingly it is imported from China, Mexico and even South America, South Africa, or New Zealand. The average fruit or vegetable travels about 1,500 miles to reach your plate with less than 1 percent of food coming from York Country Resources.

Having hands-on experience can help job applicants stand out when entering the work force, and being involved with an organization that enhances skill and ability offers students a way to gain that experience. For Penn State students, especially those majoring public relations, marketing and other communications fields, the student organization Happy Valley Communications gives them relevant experience to add to their resumes and skill sets.

Ballroom Dance Club's intercollegiate competition set for March 27

The Penn State Ballroom Dance Club's 7th Annual Keystone Classic intercollegiate competition is Saturday, March 27. The daylong competition features competitors from Penn State, Carnegie Mellon University, Rutgers University, the University of Maryland and the University of Virginia. The Penn State team will compete in various levels and in all competition-style dances, including the waltz, tango, quickstep, foxtrot, cha cha, rumba, samba and jive. The competition, which begins at 10 a.m. in 126 White Building, is open to the public and is free for spectators.

Club builds sign language skills and awareness

Every week a group of students gathers to talk--without opening their mouths. The Penn State Sign Language Organization (PSSLO) provides students a chance to learn about deafness and sign language, practice their signing skills, and get involved in service events.
