The Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equity (CLGBTE), the Commission on Racial/Ethnic Diversity (CORED) and the Commission for Women (CFW) are now accepting applications for both appointed and affiliate membership. Appointed members serve three- to four-year terms (depending on the commission) and have voting privileges. Affiliate members serve one-year, renewable terms and do not have voting privileges. Appointed and affiliate terms begin July 1.

Each year, the Commission for Women (CFW) recognizes an exceptional mentor in the University community and celebrates women who have shown remarkable professionalism and leadership at Penn State. Nominations are currently being sought for two awards: the Rosemary Schraer Mentoring Award and the Achieving Women Award. Recipients selected for these awards will be honored at the commission's luncheon on Monday, April 16, at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on the University Park campus.

Penn State's Commission for Women is spending the 2011-12 academic year celebrating its 30th anniversary, continuing its work of advocating for women at Penn State.
Plans are under way to hold events in honor of the commission's momentous anniversary, including a birthday party and display of a commemorative anniversary poster. The celebration began recently with a panel discussion organized by a group of students from the College of Communications on challenges students may face in the workplace after graduating.

The Commission for Women, in partnership with the Human Resource Development Center, invites Penn State faculty and staff to a special two-hour workshop titled "Reclaim Your Power" from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, Jan. 6, in Room 110 Henderson Building.

The Penn State Commission for Women (CFW) Achieving Women Award was given to two engineering women, one undergraduate and one administrator. Athena Abate, an electrical engineering senior, received this year's CFW Achieving Undergraduate Women Award. Renata Engel, associate dean for academic programs in the College of Engineering, was given the CFW Achieving Administrator Women Award.
Commission for Women holds Women's Technical-Service Workshop

The 2011 Women's Technical-Service Workshop was held on March 22 and sponsored by the Human Resource Development Center and The Commission for Women. This workshop, which had 102 women attending, focused on customer service skills and tools. The FISH! Philosophy program was presented by Brynn Rousselin, Human Resource Development Associate used practical and situational activities to strengthen the program concepts of engaging customers. Jill Musser, Benefits Coordinator in the Office of Human Resources provided information on Penn State benefits, while Cindy Campbell of Recruitment and Compensation in the Office of Human Resources, provided information about job bidding and handed out sample packets.

The mentoring program promotes professional and personal development for full-time Penn State faculty, exempt and nonexempt staff, and technical-service employees by pairing proteges with mentors who can provide advice and resources to help them meet their individual and specific professional goals, such as career planning, job skills enhancement and greater University involvement. From Fall 1997 to Fall 2007, the percentage of women administrators, faculty and staff has risen in general, according to the new report issued by Penn State's Commission for Women. The 2007-2008 Report on the Status of Women at Penn State presents a snapshot of key gender equity indicators. CFW Chair Molly Wertheimer notes, "The report represents the first publication of what the commission intends to be a regular, periodic tracking effort. Over time, trends in the data will measure the University's progress in achieving its goal of gender equity and, equally important, serve to identify areas where additional efforts are warranted."
