Penn State Hershey is hosting another session of CLIMB: Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery. Developed by the Children’s Treehouse Foundation, this five-week program sponsored by Penn State Hershey Breast Center addresses the psychosocial aspects of cancer as they relate to the family unit.
Penn State Hershey skin and bone cancer specialists will team up with abc27 (WHTM-TV) for a live call-in show at 7:30 p.m. today (April 25).
A compound that stimulates the production of a tumor-fighting protein may improve the usefulness of the protein in cancer therapy, according to a team of researchers, including several from the Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute and College of Medicine.
TRAIL is a natural anti-tumor protein that suppresses tumor development during immune surveillance -- the immune system's process of patrolling the body for cancer cells. This process is lost during cancer progression, which leads to uncontrolled growth and spread of tumors.
For Sinisa Dovat, THON and the Four Diamonds Fund are not only sources of funding for his novel research into leukemia, but also were inspirations to come to Penn State Hershey.
"I was happy at my former institution," Dovat, associate professor of pediatrics and pediatric cancer researcher, said. "Then I saw a video of THON and saw the energy of these kids. I never saw anything like it and was stunned. It really got me. I knew I wanted to be a part of this place, where there's an upward trend."
Dovat's lab has discovered the protein that inactivates Ikaros, a gene hown to prevent leukemia. With this knowledge, he is exploring potential treatments that keep the protein from shutting down the protective qualities of the Ikaros gene, and funding from THON and Four Diamonds Fund is important to supplement National Institutes of Health funding he receives.

The Penn State Lady Lions basketball team made its first-ever trip to Penn State Hershey Medical Center, specifically to Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute. Members of the media tagged along as team members toured the facility Jan. 2 and interacted with patients and staff. There's a strong connection between the team and Penn State Hershey - as the Lady Lions donate a portion of the proceeds from their annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association Pink Zone game to breast cancer research efforts at the Cancer Institute.
Coach Coquese Washington and members of her team toured a research lab in the Cancer Institute, where they were able to see and hear how the Pink Zone money directly supports breast cancer research efforts. Then it was off to the infusion therapy clinic where they met with patients, physicians, nurses and others. The team also visited the Medical Center's inpatient cancer unit.
At 1 p.m. Feb. 24, the Penn State Lady Lions Basketball Team will take on Michigan for the team's seventh annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association Pink Zone.
For the past six years, WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State has raised $565,317.73 for breast cancer awareness, research and patient support. Following the 2012 game, Pennsylvania Pink Zone donated $52,780 to Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute to support breast cancer research.

A motor protein that transports cargo within the cell, km23-1 is also involved in the movement or migration of cells. Migration is necessary for cancer to spread, so understanding this cell movement is important for development of better cancer treatments.
Radiation doses during mammograms is low and does not result in an increased risk of cancer, according to research being presented by Alison Chetlen at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America. Chetlen, an assistant professor of radiology at Penn State College of Medicine, said the results of her research suggest that the use of a thyroid shield during mammography is not needed.
Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center has won second place in the national Pink Glove Dance video competition. With the win comes a $5,000 check from competition sponsor Medline Industries made payable to the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition. Penn State Hershey's entry features more than 600 faculty, staff, patients, survivors and the Nittany Lion, all donning pink gloves and dancing to Katy Perry's song "Part of Me" in support of breast cancer awareness and prevention. The video, which was produced completely by in-house hospital staff, can be viewed at www.pinkglovedance.com. "We had fun making the video, especially knowing it was for a good cause and that many of the participants have been touched by breast cancer in some way," said Kathleen Law, director of nursing, perioperative services. "We're excited that our efforts brought awareness to the important issue of breast cancer and will support the good work of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition."
Any cancer diagnosis is scary, but for men diagnosed with prostate cancer and women diagnosed with ovarian cancer, uncertainty regarding diagnosis, side effects of treatment and support groups that are available can make their battle with cancer even scarier. Hershey Medical Center's Joshua Kesterson, a gynecologic oncology specialist, and Joseph Drabick, specialist in hematology and oncology, offered some answers to important questions.

It is designed to specifically address the fears and anxiety of children whose parent has cancer and provide parents with the necessary tools to improve family communication and reduce distress during cancer treatments. Open dialogue allows everyone, including children, to develop a better understanding of the changes taking place.
Mark Kester, a pharmacologist at the Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, was working with a new drug that showed real promise as a cancer therapy but that could be dangerous if injected directly into the bloodstream. Jim Adair, a materials scientist in University Park, was creating nontoxic nanoparticles that could enclose drugs that might normally be toxic or hydrophobic and were small enough to be taken up by cells. The two combined their efforts and, licensing the resulting technology from Penn State, they joined with entrepreneur Jeff Davidson to form Keystone Nano.
