Dedication of Arbuckle Building set for Friday

The dedication of the Robert D. Arbuckle Technology Building at Penn State New Kensington is set for 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, April 27.

The Penn State's Board of Trustees in November approved the renaming of the former Science and Technology Center in recognition of the former campus executive officer. Arbuckle was the impetus behind the building that is home to many specialized engineering laboratories that enable students to pursue innovative programs in technology.

Scientific illiteracy abounds in America. One recent poll, funded by the National Science Foundation, found that fewer than half those interviewed knew that the Earth takes one year to orbit the Sun.

Unfortunately, grade-school teachers are not immune. And if teachers can't make sense of basic scientific concepts— if they can't "integrate them into their own understanding," as Vincent Lunetta, a Penn State professor of curriculum and instruction, puts it—then it is next to impossible for their pupils to do so.

Millennium Science Complex nearly ready

The Millennium Science Complex on Penn State's University Park campus will serve as the new home for cutting-edge research conducted by the University's Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences and Materials Research Institute. After more than two years of construction, work on the building was scheduled for completion at the end of July, with researchers and staff moving into the facility beginning in September. A formal dedication is planned for November.
