Men's basketball to host Pink Zone breast cancer fundraiser

The Penn State Lehigh Valley men's basketball team is joining the Penn State Lady Lions efforts to raise money and awareness of breast cancer issues by hosting a Pink Zone event during their Feb. 9 game against Penn State Greater Allegheny beginning at 6 p.m. at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, Pa. The event is free and open to the public. Donations toward Pink Zone causes can be made in the lobby during the game.

Lady Lions Pink Zone to raise funds for Hershey Cancer Institute

At 1 p.m. Feb. 24, the Penn State Lady Lions Basketball Team will take on Michigan for the team's seventh annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association Pink Zone.

For the past six years, WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State has raised $565,317.73 for breast cancer awareness, research and patient support. Following the 2012 game, Pennsylvania Pink Zone donated $52,780 to Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute to support breast cancer research.

Study: Scatter radiation from mammograms does not increase cancer risk

Radiation doses during mammograms is low and does not result in an increased risk of cancer, according to research being presented by Alison Chetlen at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America. Chetlen, an assistant professor of radiology at Penn State College of Medicine, said the results of her research suggest that the use of a thyroid shield during mammography is not needed.

Penn State Hershey captures 2nd place in national video competition

Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center has won second place in the national Pink Glove Dance video competition. With the win comes a $5,000 check from competition sponsor Medline Industries made payable to the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition. Penn State Hershey's entry features more than 600 faculty, staff, patients, survivors and the Nittany Lion, all donning pink gloves and dancing to Katy Perry's song "Part of Me" in support of breast cancer awareness and prevention. The video, which was produced completely by in-house hospital staff, can be viewed at www.pinkglovedance.com. "We had fun making the video, especially knowing it was for a good cause and that many of the participants have been touched by breast cancer in some way," said Kathleen Law, director of nursing, perioperative services. "We're excited that our efforts brought awareness to the important issue of breast cancer and will support the good work of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition."

More than 600 faculty, staff, students and patients participated along with the Nittany Lion in Penn State Hershey's entry. Program helps kids with loved ones battling cancer

The Penn State Hershey Breast Center team is again offering the Children's Lives Include Moments of Bravery program. Developed by the Children's Treehouse Foundation, this five-week program addresses the psychosocial aspects of cancer as they relate to the family unit. It is designed to specifically address the fears and anxiety of children whose parent has cancer and provide parents with the necessary tools to improve family communication and reduce distress during cancer treatments. Open dialogue allows everyone, including children, to develop a better understanding of the changes taking place.

Lady Lions to host Pink Zone kick off before Saturday's football game

The Penn State Lady Lion basketball team will kickoff its Pink Zone at Penn State fundraising campaign with a Hoop Shoot prior to the Penn State-Northwestern football game. The Hoop Shoot, which will be located outside of the All Sports Museum (near gate B), will take place from 9-11 a.m. Members of the Lady Lions will be on hand from 10-11 a.m.

2012 Pink Zone donates record $203,000 to breast cancer charities

The 2012 WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State was a record-breaking event in the Lady Lions' fight against breast cancer as the Penn State women's basketball team donated $203,000 to six breast cancer charities. The funds raised by the 2012 Pink Zone at Penn State were donated to charities on the local, state and national level and included Mount Nittany Medical Center, Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital and Lewistown Hospital. In six Pink Zone annual events, the Lady Lions have now donated $565,317.73 to various breast cancer charities.
