Penn State Behrend helping to make Erie a sustainable community

Both on and off campus, Penn State Behrend students, faculty and staff are working hard to make Erie a more sustainable place to live. Efforts ranging from students participating in the National Energy Challenge and the coordination of their second Trash to Treasure sale, groups and organizations are raising awareness and generating excitement about sustainability.

Bourquin scores 1,000th point, then adds 60 more

Senior forward Holly Bourquin scored her 1,000th point Jan. 19 and has since added 60 more.

"She still has a lot of time left," said Roz Fornari, head coach of the Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, women's basketball team. "We'll see at the end of it where she fits into the record books."

Bourquin, of Fox Chapel, is just the 10th player in the program's history to pass the 1,000-point mark. She has averaged 10.9 points in each game this season.

Penn State Behrend inducts first members of engineering honor society

Members of the new Engineering Honor Society at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, are, by definition, among the best in their discipline: Only the top 1/8th of juniors and the top 1/5th of seniors are eligible.

They are expected to get even better. Tau Beta Pi members are required to tutor and do community service, and to be active at both social events and professional seminars.

School of Engineering names director for research, technology transfer

Greg Dillon, Ph.D. has been named associate director for research and technology transfer by the School of Engineering at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. In this new role Dillon will have responsibility for expanding the school's research initiatives, increasing collaboration with industry and further integrating research and development activities into the undergraduate engineering curriculum.

Psychology colloquium to focus on family reunification policies

A University of Akron sociologist will discuss her research on family reunification as public policy at the next Colloquium Series in Psychological Sciences and Human Behavior event at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.

"Does Protecting the Family Hurt the Child? Comparing Outcomes for Maltreated Children at Home and in Foster Care" is the title of Stacey Nofziger's presentation. She will speak at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21, in 180 Jack Burke Research and Economic Development Center, 5101 Jordan Road. Admission is free and open to the public, and free parking will be available in the deck south of Burke, off Technology Drive.

Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will induct the first members of its History Honors Society in April. The chapter, a part of Phi Alpha Theta, will promote research and publishing efforts by students who have completed 12 credit hours of history.

Erie students create four digital games in 48-hour Global Game Jam

Pac Man was born in a pizza box. The Japanese programmer Toru Iwatani based the character on a pizza he was eating.

The four games created by students at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, last week were inspired by the sound of a heartbeat - the assigned theme for this year's Global Game Jam, an annual hacker marathon - and by a ticking clock: The teams had just 48 hours to create, code and upload their games, which anyone can now play.

The time limit kept the games simple. "When you know you only have two days, you think small," said Matthew White, lecturer in game development. "You don't dream up a space opera."

Author Peter Annin to discuss 'The Great Lakes Water Wars' on Feb. 18

The Erie region sits atop the planet's largest reserve of fresh surface water. How much -- if any -- of this precious resource do we want to share with our less hydrologically fortunate neighbors?

Growing pressure to divert Great Lakes water to urban sprawls in the drier southern and western regions of the country will be the topic of a Speaker Series event at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Former Newsweek journalist Peter Annin, author of the book "The Great Lakes Water Wars," will discuss historical and expected water-sharing controversies, and other environmental pressures on the Great Lakes at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18, in Reed Auditorium, located on the second floor of the Reed Union Building. Admission is free and open to the public.

To understand the concept of confirmation bias, you just have to finish this pattern: 2, 4, 6 ... .

Say "eight," and you're showing bias. The given numbers tell you too little about the pattern's structure to know for certain where it's headed Do the numbers have to be even and increase by two? Or do they just have to increase?

Without asking, you can't know the answer. You unconsciously rule out any options that do not support the choice you believe to be true - in this case, that you're counting by twos. That's confirmation bias.

"The trick is to step back, and to be aware of whatever bias you bring to a given scenario," said Stephen Chalker, a software engineering major at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. "But it's hard to remember to do that."

Penn State Behrend finds success helping Erie area teens

A Penn State outreach program that has reduced truancy, teen pregnancy and dropout rates in Union City schools has expanded to Erie's Strong Vincent High School, thanks to a three-year, $150,000 commitment from United Way of Erie County.

The Positive Youth Development program was designed by the Susan Hirt Hagan Center for Community Outreach, Research and Evaluation (CORE) at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. It builds a safety net of common sense developmental assets - family support, adult mentors, after-school activities - to keep students engaged in the learning process.
