Margaret Jaster, associate professor of English and humanities at Penn State Harrisburg, has received The American Shakespeare Center’s 2013 Words in Action Award. Presented annually on Shakespeare’s birthday, the award recognizes teachers from elementary to university levels whose approach to Shakespeare inspires students and personifies Shakespeare’s advice to be “great in act as you have been in thought.”

Courtney Louise Young, head librarian at the J. Clarence Kelly Library at Penn State Greater Allegheny, has been elected as 2014-15 president of the American Library Association (ALA). Barbara I. Dewey, dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications at Penn State, noted, "Courtney Young is the first Penn State librarian to hold this honor and will bring our University to the table of this policy-making body of the ALA."
Logan named deputy editor of new environmental journal

Bruce Logan, Evan Pugh Professor and the Stan and Flora Kappe Professor of Environmental Engineering, has been named the inaugural deputy editor of the newly launched Environmental Science and Technology (ES&T) Letters journal.

Simon Bronner, distinguished professor of American studies and folklore at Penn State Harrisburg, received the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools (NAGS) Graduate Faculty Teaching Award, “designed to identify excellence and creativity in curriculum development and implementation and graduate education at the master's and doctoral levels,” at the organization’s annual meeting April 12 in New Brunswick, N.J.
Book by Penn State laureate, associate dean chosen as gold medal winner

"The Restaurant at the End of the World," the second novel by Kenneth Womack, Penn State Altoona's associate dean for Academic Affairs and the 2013-14 Penn State laureate, was selected as the gold medal winner in the 2013 Independent Publisher Book Awards. The novel was honored for Best Regional Fiction (Mid-Atlantic), and Womack will receive the medal on May 29 at a ceremony in New York City.
Loeb named DuBois Educational Foundation Educator of the Year

Robert Loeb, associate professor of biology and forestry, has been named the 2013 DuBois Educational Foundation (DEF) Educator of the Year. Nominations for the award come straight from the students themselves, and each year the DEF presents the award to a Penn State DuBois faculty member who has made a difference in the lives of students.
Bonnie Ford accepts the 2013 Dairy Laboratory of the Year Award

Bonnie Ford, quality assurance laboratory specialist in Penn State's Department of Food Science, recently accepted the 2013 Dairy Laboratory of the Year Award from the Pennsylvania Association of Milk, Food, and Environmental Sanitarians. Ford is responsible for the operation of the Berkey Creamery's Dairy Testing Laboratory.
President Gilmour’s public service prompts prestigious Army award

What began as acknowledgement of President Davie Jane Gilmour’s support of the ROTC program at Pennsylvania College of Technology has resulted in a Commander’s Award for Public Service – among the highest honors the U.S. Army can bestow on a civilian.

The 2013 Rosemary Schraer Mentoring Award and the Achieving Women Awards acknowledge and exemplify the achievements and contributions among Penn Staters, reflecting the University’s mission of mentorship, leadership, service and promoting diversity.

Librarian Amy Paster honored for community service

Librarian Amy Paster, head of the Life Sciences Library, within Penn State's University Libraries, was among the group of forty-two individuals honored for community service at the 41st annual Rose Cologne Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Paster, a seven-year cancer survivor, has dedicated each of those years to the Cancer Survivors' Association, serving as the chairwoman of the fundraising committee and as a Relay for Life participant.
