Autism linked to increased genetic change in regions of genome instability

Children with autism have increased levels of genetic change in regions of the genome prone to DNA rearrangements, so-called "hotspots," according to a research discovery to be published in the print edition of the journal Human Molecular Genetics. The research indicates that these genetic changes come in the form of an excess of duplicated DNA segments in hotspot regions and may affect the chances that a child will develop autism -- a behavioral disorder that affects about 1 of every 88 children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The research collaboration was led by a team from Penn State's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Penn State Lehigh Valley to 'Light It Up Blue' for autism awareness

For the third year, Penn State Lehigh Valley will join thousands of people coming together across the country, including businesses and organizations, to help shine a light on autism through the Autism Speaks Light It Up Blue campaign. From April 1-8, the Nittany Lion Shrine at the north entrance of the campus will be illuminated in a special blue light.

The speaker will be Scott B. Selleck, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology and head of the Penn State Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Lectures to focus on 'Your Genes: How They Contribute to Who You Are'

"Your Genes: How They Contribute to Who You Are" is the theme of the 2013 Penn State Lectures on the Frontiers of Science, which will take place in January and February. This series of six public lectures on consecutive Saturday mornings is designed as a free minicourse for the general public. The lectures will take place from 11 a.m. to about 12:30 p.m., in 100 Thomas Building on the Penn State University Park campus, beginning Jan. 19. Penn State autism conference looks at 10 essential life goals

In addition to learning to succeed in school, people with autism must master the skills to function successfully in everyday life. That inspired Barbara T. Doyle, a clinical consultant, to come up with 10 essential goals for a safe and productive life for those living with autism. Doyle's workshop on "Teaching Ten Important Lifetime Goals to People with Autism Spectrum Disorders of All Ages" is one of many topics that will be featured at Penn State's 2012 National Autism Conference, July 30-Aug. 2 at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on the University Park campus.

Film seeks to change attitudes toward autism

A critically acclaimed independent documentary about two men with autism creates new understandings and perceptions of autism. The film, "Wretches & Jabberers," will be shown Tuesday, April 24, 6:30 p.m., in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium, Curtin Road, Penn State University Park. In the film, directed by Geradine Wurzburg, Tracy Thresher, age 42, and Larry Bissonnette, age 52, embark on a global quest to change attitudes about disability and intelligence. Determined to put a new face on autism, the men travel to Sri Lanka, Japan and Finland, where at each stop they challenge public attitudes about autism and issue a hopeful message to reconsider competency.

Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S. One in 110 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, yet there are no fully effective means of prevention, treatment or a cure. On April 2, Penn State Lehigh Valley will join hundreds of other businesses and organizations across the country to help shine a light on autism through the Autism Speaks Light It Up Blue campaign. During the campaign, the Nittany Lion Shrine at the north entrance of the campus will be awash in special blue light.

Son inspires children's book for special needs children

Joanna McGowan's son, Christopher, was diagnosed with autism when he was just two years old. Since that day more than two years ago, McGowan, campus registrar at Penn State Brandywine, her husband, Dave, and their two sons have embarked on a difficult journey of healing, acceptance and never-ending love.

"Groundbreaking research into animal behavior and autism," by Temple Grandin, whose autism directed her to devote her life to animal welfare, will be presented at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13, in Schwab Auditorium on Penn State's University Park campus. A pre-event showing of the HBO Emmy winning biography of Grandin is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12, in Foster Auditorium, Room 102 Paterno Library.
