Penn College librarian recertified as professional archivist
Patricia A. Scott, librarian and archivist in Pennsylvania College of Technology's Madigan Library, has been recertified by the Academy of Certified Archivists, an independent, nonprofit organization of professionals in the field. To maintain certification, archivists must reapply every five years by taking a written exam or submitting a portfolio of professional activities.
Penn State archivist presents at international conference
Jackie R. Esposito, Penn State archivist and head of Records Management Services, was invited to present a paper titled "Should I Delete it All? Managing University Electronic Business Records" at the International Council on Archives/University and Scientific Archives Conference. The conference, titled "The Nature of University and Research Institution Archives: An International Perspective," was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from Sept. 8 to 11. Archival representatives from five continents attended the meeting.

Even though your grandparents' old photo albums are yellowed and grainy, they're still there for you and your family to enjoy. But will your grandchildren be able to say the same of the digital photo albums you're compiling today? Rapid advances in computer technology have left past hardware and software in the dust. If we're creating documents no one will be able to access, has our Information Age created a digital dark age?

When the steelworkers finally walked out, on the night of May 12, 1937, it was as though the whole of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, had risen from its bondage. The entire population, it seemed, had gathered in the center of town, around the long tunnel that made the main entrance to the immense Jones & Laughlin mill.
