Former Congressman Joseph Sestak named General Omar N. Bradley Chair

Joseph Sestak, former congressman and retired U.S. Navy three-star admiral, has been named as the 2013-14 recipient of the General Omar N. Bradley Chair in Strategic Leadership. While in residence, Sestak will conduct classes at Dickinson College, the U.S. Army War College and the Penn State University Dickinson School of Law and School of International Affairs.

Kathleen Bieschke will become the new department head for the Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education (EPCSE) Department in the College of Education at Penn State on July 1. In her new role, Bieschke will oversee two undergraduate, four master’s, and four doctoral programs for the college.

Greg Dillon, Ph.D. has been named associate director for research and technology transfer by the School of Engineering at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. In this new role Dillon will have responsibility for expanding the school's research initiatives, increasing collaboration with industry and further integrating research and development activities into the undergraduate engineering curriculum.

Hendrix named director of development for the Libraries

Nicole Hendrix has been named the director of the Office of Development for Penn State University Libraries. She will lead the Libraries' effort to raise $40 million in the For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students. To date, the Libraries have raised more than $31 million in the ongoing campaign, set to end in 2014. Hendrix began her appointment Jan. 28.

Penn State names athletics integrity officer

Julie Del Giorno, chief of staff at Moravian College and Moravian Theological Seminary in Bethlehem, Pa., has been named athletics integrity officer at Penn State. Del Giorno, whose position has been newly created, will be responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of policies and practices within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics that ensure compliance and ethical conduct. She will begin work on a part-time basis in March and will commence full-time work in her position on April 1.

"Julie is an outstanding choice for this position," said Penn State President Rodney Erickson. "As she begins her work here at Penn State, she will draw on more than two decades of experience in higher education and the U.S. military. Her track record of success in athletics oversight and operations, student affairs, logistics and institutional planning has given her valuable experience that will serve the University well."

Franks named director of Penn State Sports Camps

Ed Franks has been named the director of Penn State Sports Camps. He will begin his duties in February.

Franks replaces longtime Sports Camps Director Dick Bartolomea, who retired.

He will oversee camps that annually draw more than 20,000 participants to the University Park campus. Penn State hosts nearly 90 sports camps in 25 different sports that draw participants from across the nation and internationally.

Sociology faculty member named examiner for South African study

Vinay Bahl, associate professor of sociology at Pennsylvania College of Technology, has been appointed to serve as an external examiner for a South African university study.

The Department of Industrial Psychology and People Management at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, appointed Bahl as the external examiner for a master's degree study for 2013.

The study is titled "The Role of Dress Style for Senior Women in a Corporate Consulting Firm."

Chown named chancellor of Penn State York

David W. Chown, chief academic officer and senior vice president for the residential university of Upper Iowa University, has been named the new chancellor at Penn State York, effective Feb. 15. He replaces John J. Romano, Penn State's former vice president for Commonwealth campuses and former CEO at Penn State York, who came out of retirement to lead the campus until a new chancellor was found.

Abington names new athletics director

Penn State Abington Chancellor Karen Wiley Sandler announced today (Jan. 14) that the college has named Shawne McCoy the new director of athletics, intramurals and recreation. McCoy succeeds Karen Weaver, who stepped down effective Dec. 31.

McCoy officially joins Abington on Feb. 4 and will represent the college at the 2013 NCAA Convention in Texas this week.

"I am excited and honored to be selected as the new director of athletics, intramurals and recreation at Penn State Abington," McCoy said. "I would like to thank Chancellor Sandler, Senior Director of Student Affairs Gale Siegel and the entire search committee for entrusting me with this opportunity. I look forward to working with our coaches, staff and faculty to help provide our student-athletes with the best possible experience."

Chancellor/chief academic officer named at Penn State DuBois

Melanie Hatch, founding dean of the College of Engineering and Business at Gannon University in Erie, Pa., has been named chancellor and chief academic officer at Penn State DuBois effective Jan. 28. She follows Anita McDonald, who retired in December after nearly a decade as chancellor. Ping Werner, professor of engineering, has been serving as the campus' interim chancellor and chief academic officer since Jan. 1.

"Dr. Hatch brings broad experience as an academic leader in higher education to Penn State. She has a strong background in program development and applied research," said Madlyn Hanes, vice president for Commonwealth Campuses. "Her accomplished service in senior administrative roles, including her collaborative work with industry and community partners, and her commitment to retaining a diverse student body and workforce, dovetails very well with ongoing efforts at Penn State DuBois. We look forward to her joining us as chancellor to build on the campus' reputation for academic excellence and its strong presence in the region."

Search begins for dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences

Penn State has announced a national search for the next dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences. William Easterling, dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, will chair the search committee, and Korn/Ferry International will assist in the search.

The dean is the leader of one of the largest integrated academic and outreach units of its kind in American higher education, and is responsible for planning, budgeting, implementing and evaluating its integrated programs of resident instruction, research, continuing education and cooperative extension. With research expenditures approaching $97 million annually, the college is one of the most research-active among its peer institutions.
