York THON Committee to host blood drive Jan. 28

Penn State York's THON Committee is partnering with the American Red Cross for a THON Blood Drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 28, in the conference center of the Main Classroom Building. The drive is open to the public.

Blood is needed and one donor can save up to three lives. The American Red Cross will make a donation to THON for each unit donated. Proceeds go to the campus THON committee's effort to raise money for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. The Four Diamonds Fund helps children with cancer and their families. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, email Kara Smith at kjs5375@psu.edu or sign up in the Student Affairs office in the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center on campus.

SGA blood drive will benefit THON efforts

The Penn State Beaver Student Government Association will sponsor a blood drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17, in the Student Union Building Lodge. In addition, the American Red Cross will donate $4 to the Penn State Dance Marathon (THON) for every presenting donor at the campus. These funds will be used to provide support for pediatric cancer patients and their families through The Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital.

Give life during Black History Month

For the sixth year in a row, the American Red Cross and Penn State student sponsor groups will host the annual Charles Drew Blood Donation Campaign (CDBDC) during Black History Month. This special blood drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 12-13 in Alumni Hall of the HUB-Robeson Center, at the University Park campus. The drive is geared towards non-Caucasian students, faculty and staff on Penn State's campus, however everyone is welcome to donate. The goal of the campaign is to educate and recruit individuals to become regular blood donors throughout their lives.

Winter weather impacting blood collections

American Red Cross blood donations have fallen along with the winter temperatures, resulting in a blood supply far below needed levels. O negative and O positive types are in shortest supply, according to a Red Cross spokesperson. A number of blood drives are scheduled on the University Park campus of Penn State to assist with this need.

Members of the IEEE (formerly the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) student chapter at Pennsylvania College of Technology recently helped stage an event that raised $430 for the catastrophic loss fund of the American Red Cross of Upper Northumberland County.

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive sponsored by the Student National Medical Association and Engineering Projects in Community Service from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Alumni Hall, HUB-Robeson Center, University Park. With the movie "SAW V," premiering this Halloween, the drive will be "SAW" themed. All presenting donors will receive coupons for $2 off of a movie ticket for this new horror flick. With blood donations during August hitting just 82 percent of scheduled collections, the Greater Alleghenies Region of American Red Cross Blood Services has issued an emergency appeal for blood donors.
At Penn State, two blood drives are scheduled in the upcoming days.

The American Red Cross is seeking donations of all blood types. Type O positive and donations of negative blood types are urgently needed. A blood drive is being held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19 at the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center, University Park, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20 at the Tech. Center, Innovation Park. Appointments for any of these drives can be made at http://www.psuredcross.org . Walk-in donors will be taken at all drives.

The summer is slowly coming to an end but the American Red Cross still encourages all eligible donors to help save a life this season. During the summer months, collecting blood is crucial. At the moment, type O Positive and O Negative are at less than a one day supply. Shortages have an effect on our community patient needs. Hospitals rely on an adequate blood supply in order to deliver quality patient care. Red Cross officials are asking everyone to donate in the next couple of weeks.

Every two seconds someone in America needs a blood transfusion. Year round, the need remains constant. However, in the summer, the number of people donating is less. At Penn State, there are 40,000 fewer students on which to draw.

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday (May 7) at Gate B of the Bryce Jordan Center in honor of Fritz Spence, assistant track and field coach at Penn State who was recently diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML).
