A team of students from Penn State's colleges of Agricultural Sciences and Engineering recently placed fifth overall in the International Quarter Scale Tractor Competition, sponsored by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.

Changing cellulose-forming process may tap plants' biofuel potential

Changing the way a plant forms cellulose may lead to more efficient, less expensive biofuel production, according to Penn State engineers. "What every biofuel manufacturer wants to do is to get to the sugars," said Jeffrey Catchmark, associate professor of agricultural and biological engineering. "But the structure of cellulose itself can be an obstacle."

Automation in fruit tree production topic of IE colloquium

Paul Heinemann, professor and head of agriculture and biological engineering, will present "The Engineering Challenges of Mechanization and Automation in Tree Fruit Production" at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, in 102 Leonhard Building on the University Park campus of Penn state. The talk, free and open to the public, is part of the ongoing Industrial Engineering Colloquium Series.

Foundation donates $15,000 to Penn State tractor-safety program

Westfield Insurance Foundation, an Ohio-based private foundation, has contributed $15,000 to a project developed by Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences to help save farmers lives. The donation will help support the ROPS Retrofit Program for Pennsylvania Farmers, which provides rebate funds to install rollover protection structures, or ROPS, on tractors.
