Penn State attracts strong cohort for summer/fall of 2013

Despite experiencing an expected decline in overall undergraduate applications, Penn State’s incoming baccalaureate cohort for summer and fall of 2013 will be as academically robust as in years past, and the number of paid acceptances University-wide is 4 percent higher than it was at this time last year.

Penn State Continuing Education, World Campus, Student Affairs and Undergraduate Admissions are hosting a free information session for employees eligible for University tuition reimbursement. Spouses of employees also may attend. The session will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in 129 HUB–Robeson Center at University Park campus.

Open house to help prospective students

Prospective students of Penn State Fayette, the Eberly Campus, have an opportunity to be a Penn State student for a day by attending the open house from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 18, in 110 Eberly building.

Application Day set at New Kensington campus; $50 fee waived

It is not too late to apply to Penn State New Kensington for fall. The campus' admissions office is holding Application Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 18 for high school students and adult learners.

The New Kensington admissions staff will be on-hand to guide prospective students through the application process. Those who complete the application will receive a waiver for the $50 application fee. Additionally, applicants to New Kensington may receive an admissions decision immediately if they bring a high school transcript and their SAT or ACT scores.

High school students and transfer students are invited to live the life of a Penn Stater for a day. Students will shadow a current Penn State Greater Allegheny student as they attend a college class, tour the campus and eat lunch in the dining hall. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Room 119 of the Frable Building. Students must register in advance and may choose between two dates: Jan. 29 or Feb. 5. -- Be a Student for a Day, Jan. 30, Feb. 27, and March 27.
Be a Student for a Day events give future students the opportunity to attend classes with a current student.
-- Accepted Student Reception, Jan. 30 and April 24.
Students who have been offered admission to Penn State New Kensington and their families can learn about what they need to do between their acceptance and their first day of class.

Prospective students can hear about what Penn State New Kensington offers, from academics to college life to career choices, directly from students and young alumni with a series of three-minute videos which are posted on the campus homepage. "It's Your Time" is a Penn State initiative that features five vignettes that extoll the advantages of enrolling at the New Kensington campus. Students and alumni talk about career opportunities, education paths, classes, and student life at the campus. Even the iconic Nittany Lion gets some screen time, hosting a tour of the campus.

Prospective students and their families are invited to attend an Open House at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 12, at Penn State Lehigh Valley.

The program offers information to local high school juniors and seniors who are considering Penn State. Attendees will hear about the options and opportunities at Penn State, speak with faculty, and interact with students, staff and alumni. Participants can also attend a Financial Aid Q&A session.

New Kensington campus targeting Canada in recruiting efforts

Strains of "O' Canada," cheers of "Go Leafs" and sentences ending in "eh" may soon emanate from the student apartments at Penn State New Kensington. Hockey night in Pittsburgh won't necessarily mean the Penguins playing on television; it might be the Toronto Maple Leafs streaming on a laptop.

In keeping with Chancellor Kevin Snider's international recruiting initiatives, the campus admissions office is beginning to make forays into Canada. Danielle DeStefano, assistant director of enrollment management, spent a pre-Thanksgiving week in the True North, as the denizens of 10 provinces and three territories call their country, where she visited high schools in the Ontario province.

"This is a casual, informative open house where attendees can obtain answers to their education-related questions," said Bill Fritz, associate director of Penn State Continuing Education and World Campus Admission Services. "University tuition reimbursement can help employees and their spouses complete a degree begun previously or get started on developing a skill set that can make them more marketable."

Undergraduate application totals reach 24,000 in early November

Penn State has received approximately 24,000 undergraduate applications as of the first week of November, which is a very early stage of the yearlong University admissions cycle. This total reflects a year-to-date total similar to 2009, reflecting an anticipated shift in Pennsylvania demographics among high school college-bound students, a total that peaked during the last decade and is expected to decline through most of the next 10 years. University officials anticipate receiving about 70,000 undergraduate applications by the end of the admissions cycle, in late summer 2013. A downward trend among application totals to date appears to be occurring at many colleges and universities, although nationwide data is not available to confirm this observation.
