Penn State joins initiative to educate more low- and moderate-income students

Penn State announced April 18 that it has joined the American Talent Initiative, partnering with top-performing institutions to commit to the collective goal of enrolling 50,000 additional talented, low- and moderate-income students at colleges and universities with strong graduation rates by 2025.

For community college students interested in earning a four-year bachelor's degree from Penn State, articulation agreements between a number of Pennsylvania community colleges and the University's Commonwealth Campuses provide access to Penn State degrees.

Financial Literacy Center works to empower students from new location in Grange

The Financial Literacy and Wellness Center offers financial literacy presentations, workshops and other services. Students can request these sessions for their clubs and groups and have them tailored to the needs of the audience, addressing such topics as budgeting, student loans, credit cards and car shopping. For director Daad Rizk, the goal of these programs is to “provide students with the resources they need to make healthy financial decisions, with the aim of building financial security and freedom.”

Libraries' Textbook and Educational Resources Fund is a 2018 Class Gift finalist

Penn State University Libraries’ Textbook and Educational Resources Fund has been named a finalist for the Penn State 2018 Class Gift campaign. The fund exists to provide textbooks for loan to every student who needs one, or to provide low-cost or free electronic resources where they are needed. Voting is open through midnight this Friday, Oct. 13, to seniors of the Class of 2018, who can vote online or in person at the HUB-Robeson Center.

Lowering student textbook costs among Oct. 24 faculty workshop incentives

The high cost of some course materials can impede students’ academic success, especially because the price tag prompts many students to avoid purchasing them. A workshop on Oct. 24, accessible to all faculty instructors, aims to lower students’ textbook costs and any perceived obstacles in favor of adopting high-quality, free or low-cost open educational resources.

Scholarship helps students transition to life at University Park

The Kay and Ernie Salvino Open Doors Scholarship will support the Student Transitional Experiences Program, which is designed to help students who transition from another campus to University Park and ensure they are able to maintain satisfactory academic progress and help them as they build a new social community.

Penn State Smeal’s BOSS program celebrates 10 years

The Penn State Smeal College of Business BOSS (Business Opportunities Summer Session) program celebrated its 10th anniversary this summer. The program, which is facilitated by the Office of Diversity Enhancement Programs, offers high school students, often from underrepresented populations, who are interested in a business degree a chance to see what college life is like at Penn State.
