The Buffalo Bills Saturday (April 25) selected Penn State defensive end Aaron Maybin (Ellicott City, Md.) No. 11 overall in the National Football League Draft. Maybin was the first player selected from a Big Ten Conference institution. The Detroit Lions selected All-American Derrick Williams (Greenbelt, Md.) and Deon Butler (Woodbridge, Va.), the Nittany Lions' career receptions leader, was picked by the Seattle Seawhawks. The New England Patriots selected All-America guard Rich Ohrnberger (East Meadow, N.Y.) in the fourth round. In the seventh round, the Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers selected All-America center A.Q. Shipley.

A trio of Penn State standouts have earned additional All-America recognitions. Senior center A.Q. Shipley (Coraopolis) was selected an All-American by ESPN.com, which selects just one All-America team. Defensive end Aaron Maybin (Ellicott City, Md.) and wide receiver/kick returner Derrick Williams (Greenbelt, Md.) were honored as Sporting News second-team All-Americans. All three Nittany Lions have earned multiple All-America recognitions this season. Shipley previously was selected a first-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America All-America and Walter Camp Football Foundation and a second-team All-American by the Associated Press and SI.com.

Penn State defensive end Aaron Maybin (Ellicott City, Md.), center A.Q. Shipley (Coraopolis, Pa.), guard Rich Ohrnberger (East Meadow, N.Y.), and wide receiver/kick returner Derrick Williams (Greenbelt, Md.) have been honored as All-Americans by the Associated Press (AP). Maybin was named to the AP first team, Shipley to the second team, and Ohrnberger and Williams were recognized as third team All-Americans. Penn State standout linemen Aaron Maybin (Ellicott City, Md.) and A.Q. Shipley (Coraopolis) have been selected to the 65th Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) All-America Team. Sixth-ranked Penn State was one of only five schools to have a pair of FWAA All-Americans, joining Alabama, Florida, USC and Texas. The All-America honors are the second in the last three days for Maybin and Shipley, who also were selected to the Walter Camp Football Foundation All-America first team. Senior wide receiver/kick returner Derrick Williams (Greenbelt, Md,) was selected a second team All-American by Walter Camp. The FWAA selects just one team.

Penn State senior A.Q. Shipley (Coraopolis, Pa.) has been named the 2008 recipient of the Rimington Trophy, honoring the nation's outstanding center. In addition, Shipley and sophomore Aaron Maybin (Ellicott City, Md.) have been selected as first team All-Americans by the Walter Camp Football Foundation while senior Derrick Williams (Greenbelt, Md.) has earned second team honors. The 2008 Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year, Shipley is the first Nittany Lion to win the Rimington Trophy. Shipley and Maybin become Penn State's 92nd and 93rd first team All-Americans all-time; the 75th and 76th under Coach Joe Paterno. Penn State has had at least one All-American in 38 of his 43 years as head coach.

For the third time in the last four years, a Nittany Lion is among the finalists for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award. Penn State sophomore Aaron Maybin (Ellicott City, Md.) has been selected one of six finalists for the honor. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, Dec. 10. The Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award is named in honor of the former University of Miami, Baltimore Colts and Oakland Raiders standout. The Ted Hendricks Foundation's national selection committee will determine and announce the recipient next week.

Penn State sophomore Aaron Maybin (Ellicott City, Md.) has been named one of three finalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award, an honor bestowed upon the nation's defensive player of the year by the Maxwell Football Club. Maybin, a first team All-Big Ten defensive end, is a finalist along with linebackers James Laurinaitis (Ohio State) and Ray Maualuga (USC) for the prestigious award. Maybin could become Penn State's fourth consecutive winner of the Chuck Bednarik Award after linebacker Dan Connor was selected in 2007 and linebacker Paul Posluszny was honored in 2005 and 2006. Nittany Lion linebacker LaVar Arrington also was a Bednarik Award honoree, claiming it in 1999.

Maybin is one of only three Big Ten players among the Walter Camp Player of the Year candidates and one of only four sophomores. Five finalists for the Walter Camp Award will be announced on Dec. 2, with the winner being announced Dec. 11 during the 6 p.m. edition of ESPN's SportsCenter.

Two of the players instrumental in Penn State's 48-7 victory at Wisconsin on Saturday night have been honored by the Big Ten Conference. Quarterback Daryll Clark (Youngstown, Ohio) was selected Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and defensive end Aaron Maybin (Ellicott City, Md.) was named the conference's Co-Defensive Player of the Week. He shares the honor with Minnesota's Willie VanDeSteeg. The conference honors are the first for Clark and Maybin, who become the fourth and fifth Nittany Lions to be recognized by the Big Ten this season. The Big Ten also announced Monday (Oct. 13) that the Oct. 25 Penn State at Ohio State game will be an ABC national telecast at 8 p.m.
