HERSHEY, Pa. — Innovations, a technology development training program of Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute and the Center for Medical Innovation, will accept applications for the 2018 program from June 1 through June 30. An informational session about the program will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, in room C3860 at the College of Medicine.
Innovations, based on the iCorps@NCATS curriculum, supports the translation of biomedical research by providing early-stage education and strategic guidance to faculty, staff and students during the ideation phase of technology development. The four-week course guides interdisciplinary teams through a hands-on process of understanding the market for their technology or idea utilizing the iCorps methodology of customer discovery, developed by National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health Innovation Corps. The program teaches participants where their research fits into the world and why it is important, how to define the commercial market and potential customers, ways to enhance and accelerate research and competitiveness for funding, and how to transition into a real-world application.
This program is not focused on how to write a research paper, business plan or grant, rather the entire team will be engaged by getting out of the lab and discovering the value of their technology. The instructor guides the teams through the course, but the bulk of the work will come from engagement with real customers.
Innovations is taught by Kevin Harter, director, Center for Medical Innovation. This year’s program will begin in late August.
