UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Hannah Elizabeth Kohler is the College of Education’s student marshal for Penn State’s spring 2018 commencement ceremony, which will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, May 6, in the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.
Kohler, who served as a convocation student marshal in both 2016 and 2017, selected Michelle Knotts to escort her as the college’s faculty marshal.
A Schreyer Honors College student from York, Pennsylvania, Kohler made dean’s list in every semester. She has received numerous awards, including the President’s Freshman Award in 2015, the President Sparks Award in 2016 and the Evan Pugh Scholar Award in 2017. She is graduating with a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the Pi Lambda Theta Honor Society.
Kohler is a secondary English Professional Development School (PDS) intern and teaches English classes at the Delta Program and State College Area High School. She will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education (English/communications teaching option) and minors in educational policy studies and English. Kohler’s honors thesis is “Don’t Ask Me; Ask Them!”: Empowering Students to Lead Their Own Learning (and Each Other).
Kohler works as an innovation consultant at the college’s Krause Innovation Studio, where she guides visitors in the use of the innovative teaching and learning space. Over the past three summers, she has coordinated weekly theater camps for children ages 3-18 at the DreamWrights Center for Community Arts in York.
She has served two terms as the president of the College of Education Student Council, was a member of the Off-Campus Student Union, and was a volunteer ESL/Spanish tutor within the Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) Program for three years.
Kohler’s parents, Drew and Anne; sister, Elyse; and grandparents, Wanda and Lowell Kohler, plan to attend the ceremony. After graduation, Kohler will be attending the University College London in pursuit of a master’s degree in English education.
