Students from Penn State were named as finalists in nearly two dozen different categories for the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Region One Mark of Excellence Awards, and will find out this weekend if they’ve won at the regional level and advanced to the national competition.

The awards from the SPJ recognize broadcast, online, photo and print journalism.

Penn State students are represented numerous individual categories – including general news reporting, feature writing, breaking news photography, television sports reporting and online/digital feature videography – as well major overall categories honoring the best all-around television newscast and the best independent online student publication.

Regional winners will be announced April 22 during SPJ’s Region 1 Spring Conference in Philadelphia. The national competition will be conducted Sept. 27-29 in Baltimore as part of SPJ’s annual national conference.
