Behrend track athletes qualify for ECAC championships

ERIE, Pa. — Seventeen members of the outdoor track and field teams at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships after the Carnegie Mellon Quad Meet. Grant Rodgers, a sophomore from Oil City, set a school record in the 400-meter run, finishing in 49.04.

The college’s baseball, softball, volleyball and water polo teams also were in action last week. Here are the highlights:

Baseball

La Roche 9, Penn State Behrend 3

The Lions scored five runs in the second inning of the La Roche nightcap. The rally began with singles from Zach Murray, Ian Taylor and Scott Sada.

Softball

Medaille 1, Penn State Behrend 0

Penn State Behrend 12, Medaille 6

Carson Hauser, a junior from Westfield, New York, batted 4-for-5 in the nightcap against Medaille. She scored three runs. Alexa Bupp, a senior from Warren, and Kristen Kargol, a junior from Saegertown, each hit a triple.

Men’s volleyball

Penn State Behrend 3, Wilson 0

Penn State Behrend 3, D’Youville 0

Anthony Sprentz, a junior from Cranberry Township, recorded 29 assists and 10 digs against Wilson. Dillon Hildebrand, a sophomore from Red Lion, scored a team-high 12 kills.

Men’s track and field

Second (of four teams) at the Carnegie Mellon Quad Meet

Braeden Smith, a freshman from Erie, won the high jump, clearing a height of 1.95 meters. Jeremy Spricher, a freshman from Beaver Falls, won the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 58.84.

Women’s track and field

Second (of four teams) at the Carnegie Mellon Quad Meet

Rachel Pell, a senior from Elizabeth, won the 400-meter run and the 400-meter hurdles. Jenna Shelton, a junior from Cabot, won the 1,500-meter run, finishing in 4:53.71.

Women’s water polo

Mercyhurst 15, Penn State Behrend 7

Devon Van Rensburg, a freshman from Johannesburg, South Africa, scored three goals and added five steals against Mercyhurst.
