Cao and alumnus to receive Test of Time Paper Award from IEEE

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A paper authored by Guohong Cao, distinguished professor of computer science and engineering, and his former graduate student Jing Zhao, was recently selected as the winner of the 2018 IEEE International Conference on Computer Communications (INFOCOM) Test of Time Paper Award.

The IEEE INFOCOM Test of Time Paper Award recognizes “papers published between 10 to 12 years ago in the INFOCOM proceedings that have been most cited and widely recognized to have a significant impact on the research community,” according to the IEEE website.

“VADD: Vehicle-Assisted Data Delivery in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks” was published in 2006. It was selected in part for being notable in defining, formulating, and solving the problem of vehicle-assisted data delivery in vehicular networks. It has been cited more than 1300 times based on Google Scholar.

The paper presents the design and evaluation of VADD, a data delivery protocol for vehicular networks. Vehicular networks can be used to alert drivers for potential traffic jams or hazard situations, providing increased convenience, efficiency and safety. Data delivery through vehicular networks is complicated by the fact that vehicular networks are highly mobile and frequently disconnected. To address this issue, the authors adopt the idea of carry and forward, and make use of the predicable vehicle mobility, which is limited by the traffic pattern and the road layout. Four VADD protocols have been designed and evaluated, and their performance tradeoffs have been identified.

Cao’s research interests include wireless networks, mobile systems, wireless security and privacy, and the Internet of Things. He has published more than 200 papers which have been cited over 19,000 times. He is a fellow of the IEEE.

Zhao graduated from Penn State with a doctorate in computer science and engineering, and from Peking University with a bachelor of science degree in computer science. He is the CEO of Flipboard China.

Cao and Zhao have been invited to attend the opening ceremony of the 2018 INFOCOM conference to be held in Honolulu, Hawaii, where they will be presented this prestigious award during the opening session.
