Behrend women win ECAC track and field championship

ERIE, Pa. — The women’s track and field team at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, won the Eastern College Athletic Conference championship for the first time in program history on March 3. Behrend runners set records in the mile run and the 4x400 relay.

The college’s basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball and water polo teams also were in action last week. Here are the highlights:

Men’s basketball

Wilkes 77, Penn State Behrend 62

Penn State Behrend 78, Alfred 57

The Lions ended their season with a loss to Wilkes in the Eastern College Athletic Conference quarterfinals. Dan Wanker, a junior from Pittsburgh, scored a game-high 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting.

Men’s track and field

Fourth (of 32 teams) at the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships

The 4x800 relay team — consisting of Michael Cross, Alex Kubala, Chris Drozynski and Grant Rodgers — finished in 8:12.63, placing second.

Women’s track and field

First (of 28 teams) at the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships

Jenna Shelton, a junior from Cabot, set a school record in the mile run, finishing in 5:12.40. The Behrend 4x400 relay team — consisting of Gabriella Loeffler, Haley Yenchik, Ashlyn Carlsson and Rachel Pell — also set a school record, finishing in 4:03.82.

Men’s volleyball

Penn State Behrend 3, John Jay 1

Medaille 3, Penn State Behrend 2

Tyler Herrmann, a junior from Cranberry Township, had a career-high 18 kills and 10 digs against Medaille. Dillon Hildebrand, a sophomore from Red Lion, had 15 kills and 10 digs against John Jay.

Baseball

Elizabethtown 5, Penn State Behrend 3

Jack Herzing, a senior from St. Mary’s, struck out five Elizabethtown batters. He gave up just three hits in five innings of pitching.

Softball

Penn State Behrend 5, Concordia 1

Penn State Behrend 3, Wartburg 1

The win over Concordia gave head coach Ashley Gruber her 100th career victory.

Women’s water polo

Chapman 13, Penn State Behrend 5

Remy de Guzman, a freshman from Mission Viejo, California, scored two goals against Chapman. She also had three assists.
