Krok recognized for 'Exceptional Moments in Teaching'

Program highlights faculty excellence

HERSHEY, Pa. — Penn State College of Medicine’s Office for a Respectful Learning Environment is honoring exceptional faculty members with a new monthly award program, “Exceptional Moments in Teaching.” College of Medicine students are invited to nominate a faculty member, resident, nurse or other educator who challenges them and provides an exceptional learning experience. Click here for the nomination form.

The program’s first winner is Dr. Karen Krok, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

“Dr. Krok was one of my favorite lecturers during our gastroenterology block,” wrote a current student in his nomination. “She made class fun, engaging and memorable. The topic of hepatitis and metabolic liver disease can be confusing and complex, but she explained the concepts in manners that were easy to understand and apply to clinical scenarios.

"During class she challenged us by asking application questions that furthered our understanding of the topics. Weeks after her lectures, I still know hepatitis and metabolic liver disease very well. Dr. Krok not only taught the material thoroughly, but she also has a positivity and optimism that energized our classroom.”

Krok previously received the College of Medicine Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Penn State Health Department of Medicine’s Education Recognition Award.

“Exceptional Moments in Teaching” awardees will be honored on social media, flyers, Lion’s Eye monitors and at faculty events.

The Office for a Respectful Learning Environment fosters an educational community at Penn State College of Medicine in which all learners and educators feel supported, challenged, valued and respected. It serves all learners at the College of Medicine: medical students, graduate students, PA (physician's assistant) students, residents and fellows.
