UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State University Libraries will celebrate GIS Day on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at an event aimed to the broad audience of the Penn State community — students, staff, faculty and community members — with interests in learning about how geospatial information is being used on campus and beyond.
This year’s program, “Visualize the World: GIS, Maps, Drones, Virtual Reality, Location Intelligence,” explores the pervasive nature of geospatial information across new and emerging technologies — including drones and virtual reality — and how the geospatial revolution of interrelated technologies is enabling greater interaction with geospatial information on a daily basis.
Highlights of the program in Paterno Library’s Foster auditorium include speakers from the Philadelphia Department of Health and Environmental Systems Research Institute Inc. (Esri), as well as “lightning talks” on how geospatial information is used in research, operations and teaching experiences from multiple Penn State units. In addition, GIS research poster displays will be available for viewing in the Franklin Atrium, Pattee Library.
All programs during the day-long event are free and open to the public, and are co-sponsored by the Department of Geography and the University Libraries. The Nov. 14 schedule for GIS Day 2017 is as follows:
9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.: GIS Research Poster Display in Franklin Atrium, first floor Pattee Library.
1:30-3 p.m.: Speakers and lightning talk presentations, Session One, Foster Auditorium, 102 Paterno Library.
1:30-2 p.m.: “Learning How to Learn,” presented by Annaka Scheeres from the Philadelphia Department of Health. This talk will highlight how being learning-centric can be beneficial when working on GIS projects.
2-2:30 p.m.: “K12 Ed and THE SCIENCE OF WHERE,” presented by Charlie Fitzpatrick from the Esri education team. This talk will focus on how students in high schools, middle schools and elementary schools are using the ArcGIS platform.
2:30-3 p.m.: Lightning Talk Presentations
3-3:30 p.m.: Networking break reception with light refreshments, Mann Assembly Room, Paterno Library
3:30-5 p.m.: Speakers and lightning talk presentations, Session Two, Foster Auditorium, 102 Paterno Library
3:30-4 p.m: Rachel Weeden from the Esri local government team will provide an overview of ArcGIS Pro with examples of how its capabilities are meeting the demands of a changing desktop GIS.
4-5 p.m: Lightning Talk Presentations
