Drone technology courses scheduled at Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — As the number of drones in the United States continues to skyrocket, the Federal Aviation Administration has made the aircraft’s registration mandatory. Whether you are a hobbyist or a commercial flyer, Pennsylvania College of Technology can help you stay informed of current FAA regulations.

Starting in January 2018, Workforce Development & Continuing Education is offering two courses in drone technology:

Quadcopter (Drone) Technology
6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 4, 9 and 11
Parkes Automotive Technology Center/Field House on main campus
Explore the fundamentals of quadcopter/unmanned aerial system theory and operation. The course includes hands-on activities to familiarize participants with basic quadcopter control theory. Learn about FAA regulations that apply to the operation of model aircraft, both as a hobby and on a for-hire basis. Participants also will learn basic quadcopter safety and flying techniques at indoor flying sessions after the completion of each classroom lecture. The cost is $129.

Drone Pilot FAA Part 107 Exam Preparation
6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 16-18, 23-25
Lumley Aviation Center, Montoursville
Thinking of flying a drone for commercial purposes? All drone owners who fly commercially must be FAA Part 107-certified. In this course, participants will prepare for the Part 107 exam for remote pilots.

At the completion of the course, participants will have acquired the aeronautical knowledge necessary to pass the FAA test that is a requirement for flying drones commercially. The course includes theory aligned with FAA Airmen Certification Standards including regulations, the National Airspace System, weather, and operations of small unmanned aircraft systems in the National Airspace System. There is no course prerequisite. The cost is $295.
