Kulturel-Konak honored with INFORMS Volunteer Service Award

Sadan Kulturel-Konak, professor of management information systems at Penn State Berks, will be honored with the INFORMS 2017 Volunteer Service Award during the annual meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the Houston Americas-Hilton Hotel.

The purpose of the INFORMS Volunteer Service Award is to recognize exceptional volunteer service, engagement, and impact. In INFORMS, Kulturel-Konak served as the chair of the Transportation Science and Logistics (TSL) Society–Facility Logistics Special Interest Group, the president of Women in Operations Research and Management Science (WORMS), the Communication Officer of WORMS, a council member of Telecommunications Society and a member of the Public Awareness Committee. She is currently serving as an education outreach committee member. In addition, she regularly organizes clusters and sessions in Facility Logistics in INFORMS Annual meetings.

Kulturel-Konak's primary research focus is modeling, analysis, and optimization of complex systems using metaheuristic approaches, such as Tabu Search and Genetic Algorithms, combined with techniques from probability and operations research. Primary applications areas of her research include facility layout/relayout, redundancy allocation, orienteering and scheduling. In addition, she has conducted research on the participation of women in engineering and information technology programs and internationalizing the curriculum. Kulturel-Konak teaches courses in Project Management, Business Statistics, Management Information Systems, and New Venture Creation.
