UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — In partnership with the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) Alumni Society, Penn State IT is now accepting applications for the Margaret Hamilton Distinguished Internship with Enterprise IT Software Engineering. Applications are being accepted through Sept. 30.
A first of its kind at the University, the internship honors the legacy of Margaret Hamilton, a computer scientist and systems engineer for NASA who developed software solutions for the Apollo and Skylab missions during a time when modern computer science and software engineering were still in their infancy. Hamilton’s work has had a profound effect on the areas of systems design, process modeling, software reliability, and quality assurance.
The opportunity is open to all students — especially women and students from diverse backgrounds — pursuing degrees at University Park in the IST Design and Development option.
The successful candidate will complete a yearlong rotational engagement with Software Engineering, a department within Enterprise IT, Penn State’s largest single IT unit. The internship may consist of various functions including, but not limited to:
- software architecture;
- open source development;
- database design and development;
- application and enterprise security;
- systems integration and interface development;
- DevOps; and
- project management.
During each three- to four-month rotation with Software Engineering, the chosen candidate will be paired with experienced Penn State IT developers working on real-world solutions for the University. The student will have the opportunity to tailor the experience to meet their specific academic and career goals.
The internship presents a unique opportunity for students to gain experience in a higher education IT environment.

Interested students will be required to submit an application, their resume, and a letter of intent. Students may also submit letters of recommendation from their professors or other relevant parties including advisers or supervisors from previous internships or employment.
The chosen candidate will be selected prior to the end of the spring 2018 semester, and the internship will run from May 7, 2018, to April 26, 2019.
