— During his 2017 sabbatical, David Baker, professor of sociology, education and demography, will be a visiting fellow of the Brookings Institute in Washington, D.C., within the Center for Universal Education in the Global Economy and Development. He will be working on translational research and policy recommendations about future demographic, economic, political and health challenges from growing educational attainment worldwide.

— Jinhee Choi, a doctoral candidate in adult education, has received a Directorate of International Student and Scholar Advising (DISSA) scholarship from Penn State's Office of Global Programs. The scholarship will help fund her dissertation research, which explores North Korean defectors in the workplace.

— Education Week recently reported on a research study examining speech and language services for minority students co-led by Paul Morgan, professor of education policy studies.

— Chi Nguyen and Maraki Kebede, graduate students in education policy studies, authored "Immigrant Students in the Trump Era: What We Know and Do Not Know," which appears in the September issue of the journal Educational Policy. Rayne Sperling, associate professor of education (educational psychology), has been named associate dean for Undergraduate and Graduate Studies in the College of Education, effective Aug. 1. She replaces Stephanie Knight, who left to become dean of the Simmons School of Education and Human Development at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
