Kathy Bieschke, head of the Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling and Special Education and professor of education, has been named vice provost for faculty affairs at Penn State, effective Aug. 1.

Ed Fuller, associate professor of educational leadership, spoke with The Washington Post about the high principal turnover rate in D.C. Public Schools.

Tatevik Gharibyan, a 2016-17 Humphrey Fellow, wrote "Armenian Higher Education in the European Higher Education Area," which was published in Inside Higher Ed.

Efrain Marimon, instructor of education and director of Penn State's Social Justice Fellowship, recently traveled to Hawaii where he led a three-day workshop for high school social studies teachers titled "Connecting Law & Social Justice, Student-Centered Education, and the Spirit of Aloha: A Participatory Workshop for Teachers." The workshop featured multiple sessions and speakers, including Judge Derrick Watson, who declared President Trump's travel ban unconstitutional. Marimon also recently spoke with the Centre Daily Times about the Restorative Justice Initiative, a project he established to help local correctional facilities revise their prison education programs.

Paul Morgan, professor of education policy studies, has been named the Harry and Marion Royer Eberly Faculty Fellow, effective July 1. The fellowship will provide supplementary funds to support Morgan's research endeavors. He also was quoted in an article on Bloomberg BNA about the importance of early intervention to increase diversity in the STEM workforce.

Samantha Walker, administrative support assistant in the Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling and Special Education, has been appointed to the University Staff Advisory Council (USAC). Her three-year term began July 1. USAC acts in an advisory capacity to the central administration; explores issues, policies and practices that impact staff; suggests revisions to policies; suggests new policy initiatives; serves to advocate for staff welfare and development; and serves as a liaison with college and campus staff advisory councils.

Rose Mary Zbiek and M. Kathleen Heid served as featured speakers at the USA-CAS Conference in June. The conference focuses on the use of computer algebra systems in mathematics teaching at the secondary level.
