2017-18 performance management cycle opens for University staff employees

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — For University staff employees, now is the time to begin goal setting for the 2017-18 performance management cycle, which runs from April 1, 2017, through March 31, 2018.

“The Performance Management process will look slightly different for staff employees this year in terms of how to complete the steps, but the core principles of performance management and the timeline remain the same,” said Sara Oliver-Carter, senior director of talent, diversity, and inclusion for Penn State Human Resources.

Similar to previous years, the 2017-2018 cycle consists of three primary steps — setting goals and expectations; a mid-year check-in; and an end-of-year review — with ongoing conversations happening throughout the year between staff employees and their supervisors. Due to the launch of Workday later in 2017, which will support the performance management process going forward, staff employees are asked to document their goals and on-going performance conversations using worksheets that will be provided by their college, unit, or campus HR team, instead of the previously utilized online tool.

The first step, “Setting Goals and Expectations,” is to be completed by Aug. 31. During this time, staff members will meet with their supervisors to review their Job Responsibilities Worksheets (JRW) and discuss expectations and goals for the year. Staff members will continue to use the YOU@PSU online tool for JRW activities.

“For staff and supervisors, setting expectations for the year ahead and engaging in ongoing conversations throughout the year is a great way to ensure employees better understand how they are performing and how they impact the ongoing success of the University,” said Oliver-Carter.
