Drone operators required to submit a request form before flying at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Last July, the University announced details of a new unmanned air systems (UAS) program designed to govern — and ensure Federal Aviation Administration compliance with — the operation of UAS at Penn State.

As part of this program, all faculty, staff, students and third-party contractors — including those at the Commonwealth Campuses — wishing to operate a UAS, or drone, on University property or as part of a Penn State activity must submit a request-to-fly form to the UAS operations management team prior to flying. The request form is required both for hobbyists and those flying in an official University capacity.

“We want folks to get up in the air as fast as possible,” said Eugene Matullo, Penn State UAS operations manager. “However, we also need to make sure folks will be flying safely, responsibly, and in accordance with all regulatory and institutional requirements.”
