College of Education opens search for associate dean

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The College of Education has launched an internal search for its next associate dean for Undergraduate and Graduate Studies to replace Stephanie Knight, who will step down Aug. 1 to become the next dean of the Simmons School of Education and Human Development at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

This is a tenure track, 46-week appointment. Full University benefits apply. The successful candidate will have:

  • Current faculty status as a tenured associate or full professor at Penn State;
  • Evidence of an established record of research in a relevant aspect of education;
  • Evidence of a commitment to working collegially and with individuals from diverse backgrounds;
  • Evidence of experience as an effective instructor of undergraduate and/or graduate courses;
  • Evidence of effectiveness as an adviser of undergraduate and/or graduate students.

Experience as a credentialed professional in schools; administrative experience in a school or department of education; a record of scholarship related to the preparation of school personnel; and experience in the conduct of program approval or accreditation processes also are desired.

Position responsibilities include:

  • Strengthen the undergraduate programs in the College of Education by maintaining close ties with the Office of Undergraduate Education, and facilitating communication and collaboration across undergraduate programs in the college, and across colleges and campuses;
  • Strengthen the graduate programs within the College of Education by maintaining close ties with The Graduate School, coordinating periodic reviews of graduate programs, and overseeing the development and implementation of curricular reforms;
  • Coordinate and oversee the review of proposals for sabbatical leaves;
  • Represent the College on various committees and councils dealing with undergraduate and graduate studies.
  • Foster the conduct of research by students;
  • Coordinate and complete applicable program approval and accreditation processes with emphasis on building effective accountability and assessment systems;
  • Coordinate summer offerings, including the Learning Edge Academic Program (LEAP);
  • Provide oversight for academic advisement and certification services, recruitment and first year seminars;
  • Coordinate the academic integrity process and ensure that the College is in compliance with University policy;
  • Serve as liaison with various University internal and external committees, offices and organizations;
  • Conduct research and evaluation that help inform College policies and practices in these domains; and
  • Maintain a record of teaching and/or research in relevant areas of expertise.
