Ten elected to serve on Alumni Council

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Ten alumni leaders have been voted onto Alumni Council — the Alumni Association’s governing board — and will begin their terms July 1.

New members elected to serve on Alumni Council, along with their vote totals, are Thomas A. Ulmer (3,901), Tracey D. Baker (3,637), Kristen McMullen (3,508), Melissa Schipke (3,394), Trisha Fehlinger Mikita (3,086), Heather M. Wolfe (3,070), Shawn D. Manderson (2,706), Michael F. Catino (2,369), James M. (Jay) Weitzel Jr. (2,357), and John Hook (2,313). 

Each of these 10 alumni will serve a three-year term, from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2020.

“In these 10 representatives, our members have selected a diverse and talented group of leaders to serve their Alumni Association and alma mater,” Alumni Association CEO Paul Clifford said. “The staff and I are eager to serve Dear Old State with these Penn Staters."

Alumni Council is an all-volunteer governing body that advises and guides the Penn State Alumni Association on programs and initiatives to uphold its mission of service and support to Penn State. Alumni members of the Alumni Association are eligible to vote in the annual election, which takes place online.
Of the 139,273 eligible voters, 7,865 voted, for a voting percentage of 5.64 percent. The election was administered and results were certified by Votenet Solutions Inc., of Washington, D.C.

Following is a brief biography about each newly elected Alumni Council member: 

Thomas A. Ulmer ’96 Lib, Wellsboro, Pennsylvania; Ulmer is executive assistant for the deputy under secretary of the Navy for Policy for the U.S. Navy.

Tracey D. Baker ’93 H&HD, Philadelphia; Baker is an information technology specialist for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services/Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Kristen McMullen ’89 H&HD, Charleston, South Carolina; McMullen is director of the Student Success Center at College of Charleston, School of Business.

Melissa Schipke ’09 Bus, ’09 Com, Haddon Township, New Jersey; Schipke is founder and CEO of Tassl.

Trisha Fehlinger Mikita ’00 EMS, State College, Pennsylvania; Mikita is vice president of Digital Media Strategy for AccuWeather.

Heather M. Wolfe ’14 H&HD, Oxford, Pennsylvania; Wolfe is an assistant athletic trainer at Lincoln University, for NovaCare Rehabilitation.

Shawn D. Manderson ’03 IST, Philadelphia; Manderson is director of Global SOCR Compliance Program for ADP, Inc.

Michael F. Catino, P.E. ’70 Eng, Shamokin, Pennsylvania; Catino is president of Catino Associates, Inc.

James M. “Jay” Weitzel Jr. ’74 Lib, Springfield, Virginia; Weitzel is division counsel and corporate director for Northrop Grumman Corporation.

John Hook ’82 DUS, State College, Pennsylvania; Hook is president of The Hook Group.

In addition, and in accordance with the bylaws, the officers of the Alumni Association will be appointing 10 additional members of Alumni Council. The 10 appointments will be announced in the near future.
