Group therapy planned for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders

HERSHEY, Pa. — Penn State Children’s Hospital hosts cognitive behavioral group therapy sessions for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders.

The next eight-week session will meet on Thursdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m., starting June 8, at Penn State Medical Group, 22 Northeast Drive in Hershey.

This type of therapy is designed to treat social anxiety and extreme shyness in children. Treatment includes psychoeducation, relaxation techniques, role play, basic cognitive restructuring skills, problem-solving and social skills. In-home exercises also are provided.

The program, which is led by psychologist Dr. Timothy Zeiger, is open to any child or teenager ages 6 to 18 years with a primary diagnosis of social anxiety disorder or generalized anxiety disorder.
