AAUW State College used book sale generates more than $143,500

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — From the generous donations of books from community members throughout the year, the State College branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) generated more than $143,500 in gross sales from its annual used book sale, held May 13-16 at the Snider Agricultural Arena on Penn State’s University Park campus.

The 4,164 boxes of books — roughly 250,000 books in all — brought for the event virtually disappeared by the end of the four-day sale. Almost all of the sale proceeds are distributed locally, through community grants to local organizations that in some way reflect AAUW’s mission to advance equity for women and girls, and through scholarships to local returning adult women students.

“We are really thankful for the outcome of this year’s sale,” said Billie Willits, AAUW State College co-president. “The dollars netted will soon be distributed through our community grants and scholarship programs that advance equity for women and girls.”

Book donations for the 2018 sale will resume at the AAUW State College used book workshop, located at 176 Technology Drive in Boalsburg, with a special book drop-off day planned for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 17. The book donation bins will re-open on that date as well. Regular summer hours for boxed and bagged donations to the workshop door will resume on June 19.
