Weather forces cancellation of Arboretum prescribed fire

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Due to wind and rain in the forecast for the remainder of the week, as well as the impacts from Monday evening’s severe thunderstorms, the prescribed fire scheduled for the week of May 1 at The Arboretum at Penn State has been canceled.

It is anticipated that the operation will be rescheduled for either fall 2017 or spring 2018. More detailed information will be distributed once planning is underway.

The planned burn was to be conducted in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy and the Pennsylvania Game Commission as part of the Arboretum’s ongoing prairie restoration project. The project involves converting a 12-acre former livestock pasture into a more species-diverse meadow or “prairie patch” containing native grasses and wildflowers.
