WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — More than 900 students have petitioned to graduate following the spring 2017 semester at Pennsylvania College of Technology.
Three commencement ceremonies will be offered May 12-13 at the Community Arts Center, 220 W. Fourth St., Williamsport, with more than 780 students expected to march.
At 3 p.m. on Friday, May 12, a ceremony will be held for students from the School of Industrial, Computing & Engineering Technologies and the School of Sciences, Humanities & Visual Communications.
On Saturday, May 13, two ceremonies are scheduled. At 10 a.m., students from the School of Construction & Design Technologies and the School of Health Sciences will receive their degrees. At 1:30 p.m., a ceremony will be offered for students from the School of Business & Hospitality and the School of Transportation & Natural Resources Technologies.
The student speaker on May 12 is Lauren J. Crouse, Turbotville, who will receive a bachelor of science in applied human services.
Speaking at the 10 a.m. ceremony on May 13 is Madison L. Carts, State College, who will receive an associate of applied science in surveying technology.
The student speaker for the 1:30 p.m. ceremony on May 13 is Robert E. Wood, Williamsport, who will receive a bachelor of science in culinary arts and systems.
Crouse will receive the President’s Award for leadership and service to the college and is the recipient of the Tracy Garis Leadership Award and the Student Leader Legacy Scholarship at the college. She serves as a Student Ambassador, a Lead Link for the college’s Connections orientation program, a Senior Resident Assistant, a Student Development Assistant and an intern for Disability Services. She is a member of the Off-Campus Housing Association and the Wildcat Dance Team.
Carts is a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society, United Campus Ministry and CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ). She serves as a math tutor and is a recipient of the Presidential Scholarship.
Wood served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps and earned an associate degree in culinary arts from Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, New Jersey, before transferring to Penn College. He will be awarded the Chef John Folse Excellence in Hospitality Award and the Aramark Hospitality Award at commencement. He represented Penn College at the USA Science & Engineering Festival’s Taste of Technology, participated in the Kentucky Derby and Visiting Chef events for the college, and regularly worked with School of Business & Hospitality for outreach events such as Open House, the Science Festival and others, facilitating the molecular gastronomy presentation.
During the ceremonies, the college will present Distinguished Teaching Awards to Penn College faculty. Honors will also be bestowed upon alumni of the college.
Degrees will be conferred by Penn College President Davie Jane Gilmour, accompanied on May 12 by state Sen. Gene Yaw, chairman of the Penn College Board of Directors. Board of Directors members John Young and Michael DiRaimo will assist Gilmour at the 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. ceremonies, respectively, on May 13.
