Food Science student team takes first place in competition

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A student team representing the Food Science Department in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences recently took first place in the Institute of Food Technologists Student Association Central Atlantic Area College Bowl competition.

The Penn State team, which defeated North Carolina State University in the final round, consisted of captain Lisa Caprera, of Denver, Colorado; Xiaoqing Tan, of Sichuan, China; Jaye Aster Broder, of Ardmore, Pennsylvania; Venkata Charepalli, of Hyderabad, India; and Vijay Varma Indukuri, of Bhimavaram, India.

Alternate members of the team were Lauriel Stewart, of Fayetteville, Georgia; Taylor Brown, of Philadelphia; Yue Huang, of Yangzhou, China; Yu Zhao, of Tianjin, China; and Jason Wang, of Torrance, California.

The competition, which took place April 7-8 at the Institute of Food Technologists Central Atlantic Area meeting at Penn State's University Park campus, tested the knowledge of student teams in the areas of food science and technology, history of foods and food processing, food law and general food-related trivia.

The Penn State team finished the area competition with an undefeated record and will compete in the National College Bowl Competition in Las Vegas, Nevada, in June.

Other schools participating in the competition were the University of Delaware, the University of Maryland and Virginia Tech.
