UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State undergraduates with a passion for pursuing research, study or teaching opportunities abroad are encouraged to attend events scheduled for April 3-7 as part of Fulbright Week.
Sponsored by Penn State’s University Fellowships Office, the programming will highlight the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Program, which offers a breadth of scholarly experiences in over 125 countries.
The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has consistently recognized Penn State as a top producer of Fulbright recipients among U.S. colleges and universities. In the 2016-17 awards cycle alone, the University produced 11 faculty and 12 student Fulbright Scholars.
“The impact of a Fulbright year can be enormous in terms of professional and personal growth, and it opens up doors to future work with new colleagues," said Tanya Furman, associate vice president and associate dean for undergraduate education.
A Fulbright Scholar herself, Furman was afforded the opportunity to begin her doctoral research in Iceland.
“We are offering information sessions and conversations with scholarship holders throughout the week so that students can gain a broad perspective on the many different opportunities available through the Fulbright Foundation,” she said.
Monday, April 3
“Fulbright 101,” slated from noon to 1 p.m. in 323 Boucke Building, will lay the groundwork for the dynamic program and University Fellowships Office staff will be on hand to offer advice on the application process.
Tuesday, April 4
Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships will be at the forefront of a panel featuring alumni of the program. The discussion will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Foster Auditorium of the Paterno Library.
Wednesday, April 5
An information session scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. in 102 HUB-Robeson Center will provide insight into planning a research or study Fulbright application.
Thursday, April 6
“Fulbright Overview” will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. in 312 Boucke. Jennifer Connor, a representative from the Institute of International Education who oversees the application process, will lead the information session.
Friday, April 7
Drop-in hours will be held from 10 a.m. to noon and from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in 321 Boucke Building, allowing undergraduates to ask additional questions about the Fulbright Program.
